i suppose it is friction, but in a less scientific sense.
i.e. you already know where you want to stop, and you calculate the distance from there.
as opposed to having a coeff of friction and a vector.
imagine one of those automatic opening sliding doors.
you know exactly how far its going to open. But as it opens, it slows down.
Thats what this formula does.
