compsci is honestly the only course where that is a problem

as soon as students are given a chance to experiment with the language freely, they almost instantly run into something that the teacher doesn't understand

though it's really unfortunate that some teachers forbid the use of arrays because they can't get their heads around how such work

Completely agree, last week I had an assignment were I had to make a program, but when I started it, I realize that if I didn't use arrays my program would have like 1000 different variables. So I used arrays, but then my teacher told me that he would not mark it because he didn't teach us arrays, and that I should only use what I have leant in class, and not what I have taught myself.
