Alright so business is starting to boom for me and im pulling in some great cash making websites with my business partner. Right now im running the 13" macbook (black) with 2GB ram, 160GB HD, Intel dual core and so on. But obviously I love to spend my money frivorously on things that maybe i dont need but hey i love technology...

So here's my dilemma I need to buy myself a workstation because plain and simple my 13" screen isnt fitting the bill anymore.
Im deciding whether or not to buy myself a macbook pro 17" or maybe just buy myself a brand new 32" LCD flat panel television by samsung. Keep in mind im the programmer and I love Mac OS.

What do you guys think I should get?

An iMac seems right up your alley.

I'd suggest getting yourself a large LCD. Dual screens are delicious.

It seems my actual opinion will be ignored here (I hate Crapple). So I think I'll try and help by saying get a mac pro and Tony's idea.

2x of these are really nice, I have a friend that bought some and he's in love with them. Not exactly cheap, though. If you're using a laptop too, only 1 monitor will be fine :p

Tony's idea. And if you have the budget, replace the MaBook with a MacBook Pro.

Great news jg13.

Old guy ramble;
I grew up a forther, coding in blocks, a block being 16 lines of 64 characters, saved to disk in 1K chunks with no newlines or any other crap. Very tight focused programming. I like tiny screens with no "edge" distractions.

When I was picking up machines for some web work I told the graphic designer she could have any monitor she wanted. She got all giddy and chose this 27" monstrosity. Great for her - with sweeping graphical work. Drives me nuts when I have to use it. There is always some little flashing icon or somesuch in the peripheral vision. Completely distracting (to me). Cavemen needed that peripheral vision to save themselves from hidden tigers and crouching dragons - so it's a biological thing.

Programming in text; I like a small (but crisp) display. Nice to have two windows sometimes - docs in one, the code in the other but other than that, I still prefer the tight focus. On that point - I wish the Emoticons shown to the left of the compsci.ca input forms didn't have any animation involved. Hidden dragons - out to get me - pulling the mind away from the task at hand. On the two windows issue; I've become a fan of Konqueror when I'm browsing docs - with the embedded Konsole on the bottom half and the web site on the top. Handy, and keeps fingers off the mouse more often than not.

Even super coders can only do one thing at a time. Quick switching is important sure, but most humans can only think clearly on one topic at a time or chaos reigns - imho.

Just my two-cents. On the flip side - the new tubes sure do look nice when playing games.

Cheers
Clayton

The quick reply box is a godsend, although perhaps just a bit too small Wink

Welcome to my life :S

Browsing the web is better on 20", and I actually like MORE real estate when coding. Being able to see more than 30 lines is good, and when you're working in an IDE with a debugger running, etc, it's nice to have 1680x1050 pixels rather than 1280x800.

Man, your guy's screens are weak. My 16 year old CRT can achieve 1600x1024. Razz

Yes, but why in FSMs name would you want to run it at that resolution?

I'm finding that a laptop works just as well as a workstation for most of the things I do; with my workstation moving more and more towards a file store and remote CPU. Heck - with linux I can simply forward X over ssh and "use" my workstation as if it were here in front of me.

Running 1680x1050 on a 20" widescreen (with sexy thin edges) is amazing Smile
