Slashdot.org wrote: "More than one million people have downloaded the Opera browser in the days since Opera announced it was dropping the ad banner and going completely free. All made possible because Opera signed a search referral deal with Google." From the article: "'The current most important deal now is with Google,' the spokesperson said to Mr. Malik. That deal, and similar ones with Amazon and eBay, give those companies prime placement in the Opera search box. Mozilla has a similar arrangement with Google, with its search box and its default right-click menu search option on highlighted text sending queries straight to Mountain View." Now you have no excuse to not give Opera a try. ![Smile Smile](http://compsci.ca/v3/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Free as in beer.
Nonetheless, does anyone know how to install on Ubuntu using a .deb? I'm afraid i've never had to do it until now... |

Download the .deb from Opera's website. Make sure you have "libqt3c102-mt" installed. If you don't:
code: | $ sudo apt-get install libqt3c102-mt |
Then for Opera:
code: | $ sudo dpkg -i opera_8.50-20050916.5-shared-qt_en_sarge_i386.deb |
Unfortunately, it won't automatically make a launcher for you in the applications menu, but if you want to make your own there is a nice icon available from /usr/share/opera/images. |

Coutsos' instructions work for Hoary and Warty, but if you're playing around with Breezy, the libqt package has been renamed so the Opera deb will think it's not installable. In those cases, you can just download the STATIC .DEB from the opera site, which is statically linked. Works fine ![Smile Smile](http://compsci.ca/v3/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Didn't know about that, thanks Hikaru. Should come in handy when Breezy is released. |

I'm using SuSE because it rocks all other distro's asses. And it auto-suffices dependancies and adds all the pretty icons. YaST2 is your daddy and a half. |

I had a hard time trying to get Opera to install on Ubuntu, nobody told me I needed libqt3c102-mt, so I had to dig around and find that out for myself.
But I got it, and now I dont have to use firefox, I can use my favorite browser on both my computers |

I was a big SuSE fan just like you... After I switched to Archlinux.. Never looked back..
PS: you got to love the arch-community Installing opera in arch is a matter of code: | sudo pacman -S opera |

Has anybody else noticed that sometimes webpages take a ridiculously long time to load? Just when I type a URL into the address bar and press Enter, it'll have that "Document: 0b" for a while before it starts to show the page. ![Sad Sad](images/smiles/icon_sad.gif) |

Have you tried changing the timing on how long it takes to display stuff? I know there was a setting that got rid of any wait-times and make everything display as-it-comes-in. The only thing I've noticed is that the SuSE 9.3 + Opera 8 combo runs a lot smoother and faster than the Windows XP + Opera 8 combo. Although FireFox is somewhat slower on Linux than it is on Windows. ![Confused Confused](http://compsci.ca/v3/images/smiles/icon_confused.gif) |

I've also experienced this problem, and here's the strange part -- it only happens when using a 686 kernel. The second I choose a 386 kernel from Grub, the issue stops. Very strange ... Coutsos, try using the 386 kernel for a day or so, and see if Opera still does this. I know that I've stopped using 686 altogether because of this and other issues. Ubuntu kernel devs need to take a serious look at what they're doing, or at least implement a tool to more easily allow people to compile their own kernel =/ |

hmm that does not make sense.. i'm using archlinux (an optimised distro for the 686 arch) and i don't suffer from these problems.. |
