For anyone who's interested: Downhill Battle is attempting to create a free and open-source P2P filesharing program that they believe will be the ultimate weapon against the RIAA lawsuits that have been taking place. Instead of connecting users to a global network of users that anyone---even the RIAA---can join, this application will rely on an instant messaging chat client, and will only allow users to share files with people they trust. They believe that users who use this software safely will no longer be at risk of a lawsuit. Downhill Battle would like to offer a $500 award for any programmer who can create such a project, but is currently trying to raise the money through donations. If you'd be interested, read about it here. |

Err, an opensource P2P client? I'm all for OpenSource, but am I the only one who sees MAJOR security problems with something like that? |

@ Hikaru.
You know, it took me the longest time to figure out that the yellow colour at the top edges of your avatar are border colours and not hair...and all this time I was thinking Hikaru was a girl...
Then I found out...Hikaru no Go...aha...
Anyway, I guess I should at least comment on this thread, e'en though this is spam...spam spam wonderful spam, what would we do without thee.
Umm, $500 probably wouldn't cover the legal bill when RIAA find some loophole...or make one...but what do I know (not much really...). Sounds interesting nonetheless.
Refrain:
Spam oh spam oh spam... |

Indeed, RIAA is not the issue here. It's the American currency that I'm most concerned about, how much will they shave off the top if I ask for the money through PayPal? |

Well, this is the spam thread, isn't it? I thought the whole point was you could advertise stuff here that would piss people off in other threads. |

Sure! No one's stopping (sp?) you...just giving you fair warning that your advertising may not be entirely effective.
Or it could generate so much activity (in the form of senseless spam of course) that it could be a huge success.
Now dance! Like there's muskrat in your pants! |

Anyway, I don't actually have any connection with Downhill Battle, but I just thought someone might be interested. And they do need programmers. Anyway, whoever noticed that open-sourcing it may be a security problem you're probably right about that. However, unlike some filesharing programs that protect you with encryption, this one works simply by letting you choose who you connect with. Even if the RIAA were able to crack it, I don't think they'd be able to do much damage. |

Well, I thought it was useful information.....it's an opportunity for someone to gain programming experience, make money, and give the finger to the RIAA. But if you're not interested, just ignore it. Of course, being a newbie, this will probably result in senseless flaming against me, even though I took the liberty of posting here instead of in News, General Discussion, or Contests.
Anyway, they need programmers, so I just decided to do everyone a favour by asking here. If nobody's interested, I can't force you. I just thought you should know. |
