PostPosted: Mon May 26, 2003 9:19 am   Post subject: How to make my computer into a server?

Right now I have a URL and am paying for web hosting (which I really dont want to).

How can I change my DNS settings and how can I turn my computer into a server (I might as well, I leave it on all the time anyways).

Thanks,

Ted

PS. I am fairly good at flash and if anyone is interested in a tutorial please inform me. Check out my site at www.metallicsurge.com. I got some good examples there.

foxserv is probably the best. it installs apache, mysql & phpmyadmin, php, perl, and python

go to a search engine and search for it. its very popular..
as for a dns you can use no-ip.com. its free lol Very Happy free is good (well not all the time) there's really no help file for foxserv because all you do is install it. look through the dir's it installs and its pretty self-explanitory.

Ok, I have foxserv set up, but I can't access the directory via no-ip.com's DNS service... I tried editing the ServerName property in the httpd.conf for Apache, but it didn't work. Any help?

could be a number of things..
check http://localhost to make sure everything is working

if you have a router, make sure you map you're computer's internal ip so it's pointing to you're computer on port 80

Install the software that comes with no-ip on their website, and launch it. As for the server i think Daemon is the best for that, but that's probably just me.

Ok, I do have a router (I suspected that's what the problem might be, but didn't know how to fix it). Now, do I just map it through the setup in the router itself?

ok, you gotta login to the router and go into your NAT settings, then from there go into Virtual Server (well thats what its called on mine)... then on mine it shows a list.. headers are: Private IP, Private port, type (udp/tcp), and public port...
i assume you know what they all do, if you dont.. then

private ip is the internal ip of your computer, private port is the port on your computer, and public port is the port of the router that the people will be trying to access.... so both ports should be set to 80.

if you still dont understand... add me to your msn at dark.blade@sympatico.ca and i'll help you through whatever problem you're having

i have linksys router....

i have badblue webserver... www.badblue.com < upload function expires after 30 day trial... but download stays forever... < u can add php wit hti really easily.... features: users (alow certain users to acess certain folders / files).. password protect... easy setup wizzard... u can allow users to have their own folder for UPLOADING files to ur pc and u can set a max size for that... or have jsut 1 upload folders and let ppl upload to it.... also can have a max size... integrated with www.dyndns.org < redirect service.. pretty good... free... alows like 3 redirects undo one account.... lots of choice and avaible names...

if u want to see what badblue lookz like...

http://uploads.homeftp.net < got that name form dyndns...

above is my webserver.... as u can see i have a public folder.. a musik folder... a password protected uploads folder (used for my forum so ppl can upload mp3s and such wihtout killing forum space).. and i have 2 hidden password protected folders.. underground and roms...
but lately i dont keep it running much cuz i have slow comp and i need all the speed i can get when playing runescape :sadly shakes his head in embarassment:

now.. for router fixing... take a look at this screenshot... do this if u have linksyss router....THANKS A TON TO Rob AKA CanadianRob! < he helped me out a couple months back so i could get mine running... he was a tech support person for some networking place.. so he knows his shit...

ok... ur ip will be different... but .. . enter in the last 3 digits in the box provided.. thsoe 3 didgits should be the last 3 from ur LAN ip addy
(screenshot)): http://www.members.shaw.ca/rfolz/router.gif
its that simple... no port forwarding is needed! thats what he had to do to mine... and thats all..

http://127.0.0.1 is only accessable by ur pc.. others cannot use it..... to get ur NETWORK ip addy go to www.whatsmyip.com .... ur LAN ip can be obtained by going start, run, then typing 'winipcfg'

ur network ip is what others will have to type to access ur server... or u can use a redirect service to point to that ip..)

hope that helps u all out... i know it was really frustraong for me...

if u dont have a linksys router.. try emailing canadiarob's email... or darkblade....
