Name and Version Change!
Sun has decided to change the java naming and versioning scheme to better reflect the "changes" made to the java platform. for more details: http://java.sun.com/j2se/j2se-namechange.html
note: they have kept the "J2" in the naming scheme. Although it appears to be impossible at the moment to introduce the "third generation" language, i guess sun still hopes that probably someday they could introduce another oustanding and dramatic modification to the java programming language. |

JDK J2SE 1.5 Update 4 has been released, if you haven't already downloaded it,, do it now.. it's a bug fix release and they specially fixed some rendering issues.
Eclipse 3.1 is finally completed and released to the public. This new version is actually amazing.. they have cranked up its performance like.. well its quite remarkable.. anyways they also fixed a lot of those little annoying issues and those troublesome bugs.. also most importantly they added 1.5 support along with a few other new features...
check out the New and Noteworthy and the Performances Results. Download it here. |

Sun has changed the Java Brand and simplified it.. Now instead of J2SE 6.0 etc.. we just call it Java SE 6 (yea we drop the ".0" and we drop the "2")
When expanding the acronym we write it out like this:
Java Platform, Second Edition 6
the same goes for J2ME and J2EE. |

If you haven't already upgraded, then upgrade to Java 6. Its a performance release. Some major optimizations have been implemented in this release!
Either way, Java 7 is currently under development. This release will be bundled the new Swing Application Framework. The framework really does simplify swing development, well at least some part of it, but you don't need Java 7 to use it. You can try it out right now: here and read more about it here
Java 7 might also include a language update.

Netbeans 6 Matisse Preview: here
It now automatically makes use of the Swing Application Framework.
It also comes with Ruby on Rails support: demo
Cool huh?. The IDE is in its beta phase. You can test it if you wish. It is expected to be completed and released by November. |
