What is it like? I applied to universities a few weeks ago with Carleton being my top choice and they accepted me a couple days later, so I'm pretty excited Smile I applied for the Co-Op Computer Science Honours with the Game Development specialization or whatever. I'm just curious if anyone here currently attends or has attended and what they think of it? I've only been on campus once but I didn't take the tour. Some people told me they have really nice computer labs, is that true? I'd love to hear what it is like.

Thanks in advance,

Take a look at the following:

Also Clayton is a student there, and I am sure he made a great post about his experiences there but I am having trouble finding it right now... Hopefully you can find it.

"Clayton" is not a School, "Clayton" is a person.

Clayton is also no longer a student at Carleton.

If you have any questions about campus and such I'll see if I cananswer them (not in CS, but SE). I also know a couple of CS students who might be able to answer questions specifically about the CS program.

There are a few nice-ish computer labs, but like all campuses the best computing resources are locked up by grads and research projects. Mostly you're best bet is to have a decent laptop of your own and an unlimited data plan on your phone (campus wifi sucks horribly). Campus is big-ish - but not so big that you get lost. The tunnels make getting around in the winter warmer, but not any faster. There is also plenty of construction at all times to make getting around just that little bit more challenging.

How is the Software Engineering program at Carleton. I am very interested in attending Carleton for either Software Engineering or the Computer Science with the SE stream. How are the courses and profs and how much coding do you actually do?

The Software Engineering program starts off very light on actual coding, as the first two years of all the engineering programs are almost all the same. It's a lot of math and physics really, with a few lighter CS courses in place of the more engineer-geared computer courses. Second year does have more CS type courses, but again it's a lot of general engineering.

Profs are usually good, so far I've only had two who I've had any difficulting understanding in lectures. Courses are pretty easy too as long as you actually study and go to lectures. Due to the size of the engineering courses the exams lean towards a lot of multiple choice or simpler (easier to mark) questions.
