you do realize that AMD is a bit different, right? Okay the XP3200 runs at 2.2GHZ, but can easily compete with the P4 3.2GHZ, thats why AMD calls the processor XP3200+ |

Ugh...yes I do realize...
And by the way, the 3200 is still a little under the P4 3.2GHz |

Is it a good deal?
Yes and no... but mostly no.
Although the P4 3.2 Ghz is a great CPU, you could get a faster Athlon 64 3200+ for less. 512MB of memory is great, but whats the speed and brand of the memory chips? 250GB hard drive.... is that really necessary? Considering the low price of the total system, i'm willing to bet that the GeForce 4 is a cheapo MX version (total crap). Firewire is standard these days. Practically every motherboard comes with onboard firewire. Same with USB 2.0 and ethernet. The TV tuner is a nice addition, but the quality of the picture could differ severely depending on the brand. 6-in-1 flash... another cheap-o feature that most people won't need anyway. PCI sound card.... great... that tells me nothing.... what model is it? Almost every sound card made in the last 6-7 years is PCI based.
Basically, it seems like a good deal but, like usual, it's probably not. If you don't mind having a kickass processor with sh!tty everything else, then this would definitely be your computer.
When you buy a comp, make sure you know what brand and model the video card and sound card are. Almost every pre-built computer has a kick-ass processor but sh!tty everything else since no one knows what the other stuff does and only recognize that it has name brand processor.

Not true. The Athlon XP 3200+ is actually comparable to a Pentium 4C 3.0Ghz processor. In fact, most people consider it slightly slower than a 3Ghz P4.

Bad idea Andy. Better off with a Athlon 64. The FX, although faster than the Athlon 64 3200+ (the fastest Athlon 64 available at the time of posting), costs about $400 CDN more and worst of all, requires the use of registered ECC RAM (about double the price of regular RAM). Another problem with ECC RAM is speed. Registered ECC RAM was intended for server use where the increased reliability is paramount, but it costs a crap load more and doesn't generally come in speeds higher than PC3200 (few exceptions). The Athlon FX also requires the use of a Opteron motherboard which are really expensive.
The best processor available right now is arguably the Athlon 64 3000+. It's the cheapest Athlon 64, and therefore the best. Reason: it offers all the features of a Athlon 64 at a great price and is highly overclockable. |
