I had a substitute teacher had done his masters degree at U of T who said that he hated U of T and told us NOT to go there because he said that he just felt like a number and it was a terrible university.
I've been reading about them and I'm very interested in going there. What are your experiences with the university? Is it such a bad place? |

You'll be a number. Universities are businesses driven by profits. This is true of all Universities, but it's more apparent in larger schools; newer/smaller schools try to differentiate themselves while they can still manage a smaller student population.
Some find this aspect of the University experience important, but there are many others to consider as well. |

You're only a number during your interactions with "the system" (ie. registrar, course sign ups, exams). However, this does not preclude general friendliness, or stop you from making good friends. And honestly, if you're an "average" student and stay on top of deadlines and make careful decisions, then you don't really have to deal with "the system" too much. My experience with UofT, and specifically CS, is that there are a lot of good people there.
A lot of students are bitter because they had an unfortunate encounter with "the system" (read: got screwed over), or they are doing badly / feel they are not getting the grades they deserve. But honestly, I think almost every university student can attest to feeling this way... Think of it as a life lesson; life isn't always fair, and you'll certainly be a number to the government a lot of the time in the future.
Edit: Ultra late, almost to the point of necro-ing, oh noes! ![Shocked Shocked](images/smiles/icon_eek.gif) |
