I was using my computer not 6 hours ago before going to bed. My windows update ran while I was sleeping. I woke up, turned my computer back on, and logged in. Once logged in, I could barely do anything, so I ctrl alt deleted to bring up my task manager to view the processes. I am running 99% System Idle Process. It will not change at all. The task manager is the only thing I can get to open. I use Windows XP Home, I have Katspersky protection, what should I do?
Thanks in advance |

System Idle Process lists the % CPU power that is not being used. having it at 99% means that 99% of your CPU's power is available to other programs. |

Make sure your explorer.exe (in the Processes Tab) is running. If not, when in task manager go to the Applications Tab then click new task, Enter 'explorer.exe' (without the quotes).
Hope that helps. |

I am using a laptop to post here.
The explorer.exe is up and running, but it is at 0. I have tried rerunning it, but that just freezes the PC. |

You may have a virus or something, because The Guardian was right, System Idle Process is how much memory is not being used.
I assume you have tried rebooting your computer? |

What you need to start doing is thinking outside the box. It is true that what is happening can be due to a virus, but I doubt it because these problems started right after your Windows update.
You should check on what downloads were successful in that update and how they could result in the slowing of your PC. You can be experiencing microsoft.NET Framework problems or a new security update from windows can be contradicting your current security and slowing your computer down (like two firewalls on at the same time) My suggestion is to start your computer in safe mode and see if it is running at usual speed, conduct some searches on new files (especially executables and batch) on your C drive. If you see anything that you know you haven't downloaded and it appears to be harmful, delete it right away. Conduct a virus can if you can as well.
If you have a virus and don't know where it is at all, i just recommend that you run a recovery or you contact your local computer store in restoring your hard drive. To be better prepared next time for viruses I recommend using BitDefender Total security, rated best by toptenreviews.com |
