However it would be cool if there was a secret forum that could only be seen or accessed only with the key Smile

Just look at your old posts and donate to the people that helped you when you were new and hoarded your bits

Cool, if you are not going to set that up again can you at least make it so a funny little icon appears beside you User post or something? if not you may as well just remove that who section cause whats the point then?

The point is that it would take too much effort to remove something that most people don't know about. Also then we wouldn't have topics like this one.

A system that rewards a high post count brings nothing but garbage into a forum.

A +/- system is much more effective when not abused. To wit, a reference to Monty Python is not grounds for +karma.

I never really liked the karma system in my defence.
The bits system is really nice for applauding those who help you, even if it can't purchase any rewards.

I looked after, when you do get an insane amount of bits, you can get some more or less useful things. However they are rewards for users that have spent great dedication to the site forums and is an active member. For most users though, these bits will just be useless. Karma system is Ok, but common, people arnt perfect and often can NEVER say what they really mean. I tend to miss read things ALOT and skip certain words often Hence I dont get what the person has really met. And then I flame the people because I may have missed one crutial word that can turn advice into what appears as a flame to me. 'Karma's a *****' lol.

I happen to really like the karma system (though I'm probably biased because my karma score is pretty positive). I think that, in general, you'll find that the regular, consistently-helpful users of this forum (Tony, Dan, Btiffin, Gandalf and quite a few others) tend to have positive karma scores. Why some users don't have many positive points (methodoxx, for example) is beyond me. The negative votes seem to be primarily from new users who don't follow the harsher explanations of some members.

Basically, I'm saying I don't think the karma system is abused here. The karma of a user is a reasonable measure of their ratio of helpful posts to unhelpful posts.

I agree completely that post count is entirely irrelevant, as is time spent on the site (though there is an interesting effect where the longer-standing users tend to be the more helpful ones).

What would be most helpful to quality of the forums is if there was some way of screening for a basic level of comprehensible spelling / grammar -- I know some members have a legitimately hard time with this, but they're generally pretty comprehensible -- but unfortunately there's really no way to do that automatically.

What might be more useful is if there was a directory, on the front page, of the most useful posts to reference frequently. It's easy enough to look at the Tutorials page for your language, but it could take quite a while to find what you're after. An index of the most helpful tutorials could eliminate some duplicated work and make it easier for new users to look up their answer directly.
