PostPosted: Thu Apr 15, 2010 5:45 pm   Post subject: Best Value Cable Internet Plan

I was wondering...what is the best value cable internet plan available in Ontario and more specifically, Toronto.

I currently have Rogers Lite Service for about $40/month with other services but others I know get better value and unlimited plans from DSL companies.
I do not like DSL because of the fact that its speeds drop for every block from the distribution station.
However, Rogers increasingly seems like a ripoff.

I would like to know if anyone has tried another cable internet company with service in Toronto and a good reputation.

Thanks for the help.

Don't worry about the DSL. I'm miles from the nearest station and I get great speeds (even while gaming), and that's Bell! It does suck at night but that's disconnects, not speed.

there is no cable competition in canada. your choices are based on who you're zoned to. rogers is fine tbh, if it is a bit expensive.

Yeah, depending on where you live, your choices are most likely Rogers or Bell. Bell ripped us off by giving us the Lite speeds while we paid for the higher speed one. We switched to Rogers and we pay about $10 more a month, but we get 10 MBPS now.

So do you lost internet altogether at night or just timely disconnects.
Are the disconnects timed and if so, how long are they?

Please elaborate....
Thanks.

EDIT: BTW... regardless of speed, has anyone ever gotten above a 300 Kbps average when downloading?
I am supposed to receive 3 MBPS (it even shows up like that on speedtest.com) but never got more than maybe 500 MBPS in practical downloading.

There is a difference between b/sec and B/sec. Lower-case b refers to bits, while B refers to bytes. 8 bits in a byte, so a speed reported as 3 Mb/sec translates to 375 KB/sec.

ISPs like the b version since it's a bigger number. When downloading files, the B version is usually used.

So this would be referring to 10 mega-bits per second?
But my school's downloading speeds reach upto 7 MBPS (mega-bytes per second), isn't that a little too fast?

Wouldn't that be split between all the computers in the network?
I don't know much about networking, but that seems logical.
Anyone want to give a better answer than this? (or confirm it)

It should but sometimes, individual downloading speeds on computers are that fast (provided that the rest of the class isn't using the internet for anything big.
