In Pocahontas there's a guy named John Smith who came with a group of british sailors in search of gold and his main job was to deal with the indians. He meets an aboriginal named Pocahontas who teaches him the ways of her people. He goes back to the men that he came with an tells them that the land belongs to the indians and that they aren't savages and can teach them. Then John ends up getting held prisoner by the aboriginals because of a misunderstanding and then gets released and accepted by the indians. Then he gets shot by the leader of the men he came with Governor Ratcliff.

In Avatar there's this guy named Jake Sully who came with a group of scientists from earth in search of unobtainium and his main job was to create a good relationship with the NA'VI. He meets a member of the NA'VI race named Neytiri who teaches him the ways of her people. He goes back to the men that he came with and when he realizes that he can't let them destroy the NA'VI's home. Then Jake gets held prisoner by the NA'VI because they don't trust him anymore. Then the NA'VI release Jake and he fights with them against Colonel Miles Quaritch.

Just as a further point look at the similarity in the characters
Pocahontas............Neytiri
John Smith.............Jake Sully [J.S]
Governor Ratcliff......Colonel Miles Quaritch
Kocoum.................Tsu'tey -- both are engaged to Pocahontas/Neytiri and get really mad when they see her with John/Jake and both are next in line to become chief/leader of the tribe and both somehow die
Nakoma.................Trudy
Grandmother Willow...Uyea(the tree of life) --they're both willow trees

Something a friend of mine pointed out.

thoughts?

I never saw the resemblance before, I was blinded by the obviousness of it's similarity to Dancing with Wolves. Nonetheless, how many movies don't borrow plots? I think it's a spectacular film, the quality of which I haven't seen in a long time. Even better in 3D. Finally, a director who doesn't rely on an extra dimension to promote the film. Rather, it is subtle and emphasizes a beautiful environment and accentuates an incredible script.

That last bit was rather unrelated to the topic, but hell, I've been waiting to discuss it with intelligent people, but too lazy to start a thread.

I LOVED Avatar. Really I did. It looked amazing and the story, in my opinion, was very engaging because it really interested me. A+ waiting on the sequel Smile

Hell no, sequels ruin movies! Unless it's a continuation of the original plot (Harry Potter, LoTR, etc). Pirates of the Caribbean was great, the sequal was good, and the third (trequal?) wasn't all that great at all. Sequals, I believe, are spawned out of money, with directors and producers trying go squeeze as much out of their old film as possible, while the original (in the case of directors who don't suck) was made with great vision and had lots of love thrown in it's production.

Planned sets win, spontaneous continuation fail.

I think that the sequel will be kinda bad.
for a number of reasons too.

1) there were no unanswered questions
2) the world was thoroughly explained
3)characters were developed
4)no plot left to explore

As it stands I agree with Insectiod

The humans will be back...with bigger guns. Seriously. Your shipping them back, yet there's bound to be a new shipment of bigger badass units from earth coming back. Uhg. The ending irkes me.

Bitch, Bitch, Bitch.

Honestly. If you don't want a sequel, don't go and see it. I want one because I really liked the world they created :\

If there's a sequal, no force on earth will stop me from seeing it. I won't like it though.

No. A sequel is out of the question (I believe that the director has already mentioned that before). The movie was really, really good. The plot was fantastic, and the animation was amazing! I believe that in the 5 years this movie took to complete, the director created one of the best movies of all time. I recommend anyone who hasn't watched this movie to go shoot themselves and then later watch it at hell/heaven.

You are wrong.

http://www.sliceofscifi.com/2009/12/22/cameron-plans-avatar-trilogy/

Some people say Avatar was a stupid movie. It occurs to me that claiming a movie like Tokyo Gore Police sort of discredits any kind of opinion, so that's all I have to say about that.

Anyway, the movie was pretty good. Take a step back and try not to become rabid fanboys.

The linguist of Avatar intends to extend the Na'vi language, even if the director will not make another movie. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8408245.stm

I think there will be a lot more about this world before Avatar disappears. I really hope they make another movie or more than just the official game. The "Avatar" idea has more potential than some people may give it.
