I want to go to waterloo next year but im having a bit of trouble deciding what to go in... Im not too worried about actually getting in cause as i stand now my average is like 90sumtin and it wont be dropping much. (french might bring it down a bit tho...) Anyways... i cant decide wether i should take a physics major or a compsci major seeing as i love both areas. Physics is one of the most interesting fields of science there is and im good in it... and some of the stuff i read up on on my spare time is just mind-blowing.... but i also love programming... its one of the funnest things ive done, and it poses a challenge too so theres a bonus... But since i like both fields so much i dont know what to do... is there a way i can double major in those fields or would it not work? Any help would be appreciated.

thx in advance,

To get you started, http://ugradcalendar.uwaterloo.ca/?PageID=592

- double degree
- joint double degree
- minor
- option

You could probably find the same from the Physics side, for a total of 7 different ways you can combine the two disciplines.
Latest from compsci.ca/blog: Tony's programming blog. DWITE - a programming contest.

incase you find double major too daunting:

if you plan on taking physics at uw anyway, just start in CS. the maths are higher level than the math for sciences, and if you take physics 121 as an elective, which is the same as what the physics majors take (i think), then it should be extremely easy to switch into physics if you wanted to.

@Tony : link was usefull thx...

and i dont think a double major would work (damn)... would be too many classes, and would have to prolly stay another year... i might have to settle with a minor in cs...
aw well its better that nothing right? lol

I'm a bit unclear on which combination plans are available. Only the ones on http://ugradcalendar.uwaterloo.ca/?pageID=590 ? Because I wanted to take the Computer Science program and double-major in math/CS and chemistry... is this not possible (at Waterloo)?

You probably want this page, a couple of links down from the one you posted.

I read that page.

"Z" refers to any discipline, in a faculty other than Mathematics, that makes a combination honours plan, minor or option available to Faculty of Mathematics students.
If not all departments make this available, then how do I determine which ones do?

Have you taken a look at how close Applied Math is to the parts of Physics you enjoy? Just an idea that I'd toss out there.

Students should consult with the unit offering "Z" for course requirements.

That means you need to look at the descriptions of the courses required by your secondary degree (the one in another faculty) to check that they don't say something like "not open to Computer Science majors" or "not open to students in Mathematics". You can view course descriptions here.
