The theme has to be made specifically for Windows 7. Also, yeah I just installed Ubuntu over my W7 installation yesterday. So much better. W7 worked fine on my computer though. |

i honestly don't see the greatness of ubuntu...i found it quite limited
ubuntu did not like any of my hardware. and it ran slow as hell on my laptop.
i went to the help forums and people were like well it should be fine (one of my biggest problems...it didn't like my ATI 3600 256 dedicated graphics card.) |

@ecookman: Did you actually install it, or just run it off the CD? Running off the CD is going to be slow as it has to contend with the extremely limited CD access rate (less than 1/10th a hard disk). Secondly, there are dozens of advantages to not running Windows:
1. No viruses.
2. No malware.
3. No trojans.
4. No security exploits
5. Nothing slowing your computer down unnecessarily.
6. Regular patches and updates (every 6 months for Ubuntu).
7. Programs are free in general, with no popups or other stupid nonsense telling you to buy things all the time.
8. That whole "it just works" thing.
9. If something is broken, there are solutions - maybe not immediately, but it's a work-in-progress. Under Microsoft's regime, you're basically #$%^ed if something breaks.
10. It's simple. If you're a newbie user, there are user-friendly Linux distros that make learning to use your computer literally painless, rather than "Microsoft-painless"*.
I could go on, but let's just say that at this point I'm considering donating my time to the WINE project so I can get all of my games running on Linux; they're all that's tying me to Windows at the moment.
* The term "Microsoft-painless" is a misnomer; it refers to a state wherein the user is in so much pain that they are forced into a state of shock, their brain literally becoming completely numb to the pain and suffering inflicted upon it (and also to any brief glimpses of glory).
P.S. I make no commend of OSX here for a reason: I've never really used it. |

ecookman @ Wed Jun 03, 2009 8:11 pm wrote: it didn't like my ATI 3600 256 dedicated graphics card.) There's your problem. It's not that Linux doesn't like ATI, ATI just doesn't like Linux, and therefore they make crappy drivers for it. If you installed Ubuntu (which I hope you did and you didn't run off the CD) then you could most likely use an open-source driver for that card. There are drivers for almost everything now in Linux, but I remember a few years ago it wasn't like that. |

I loaded up ubuntu on a 30.1 GB EX3 partition.
As for the drivers... I tried to use both at first i tried to use the Open source drivers for it, and it would start loading them and then at about 80% it would say a problem had occured...one time it said that the card did not exist.
People at the community help thought that mabe the OS didn't burn correctally to the CD...So I loaded the Boot Disk and did the disk check..it said it was fine. So i then formatted the partition and grabbed another copy of ununtu and i had the same problem. Except this time it didn't like my ATI card and my wireless card.
After feformatting the drive again and loading a new copy of ubuntu it still didn't like my graphics card and the OS ran extreemly slow (slower than windows Shitsta) Have you seen lag trying to play the Connect 4 game...
------------------------------------------------------------------EDIT----------------------------------------------------------------------------
another annoying problem that I had is ubuntu wouldn't detect that I had a sound card. I gpt as guy to help me with getting ubuntu to say I had one. Although we did get it working....it never worked properly: volume even at max was very quiet and i couldn't get headphones to work with it.
over all my ubuntu experience was dissapointing.
(another problem i had was the small incompatiblity gap between ubuntu and the windows Xp machines at school. although Oo can save in a .doc format...the computers never like opening them without completely screwing up the formatting.)
Ubuntu hates me...and refuses to work properly for me. |

Try using your win7 as a NAT router for a 10.x.x.x subnet. Oh wait... Yea you can't. |
