is a laptop necessary for first year CS uni students? i have a desktop at home and ill be commuting

It's not necessary, but I recon it would make it a lot easier. At least a netbook is good for notes. Plus, you could install LogMeIn or TeamViewer on your home computer and control it from your netbook anywhere with internet access.
