I'm not in co-op, and I took too long to start applying for summer jobs period...so now I'm stuck looking for minimum wage work, and it's actually very hard this summer in the small town I'm from. I'm a 3rd year computer science student, and I happened to wonder into a business today that said they would love to hire a full time web programmer for the summer. They know that I don't have a whole lot of experience with it -- the job will entail fixing code that's already there, among other things, which I have experience doing in class with PHP.

So yeah, an awesome situation to wonder into. I unfortunately don't really have a portfolio (I'm not big on the web dev)-- and this business was okay with that. What I'm asking is: what should someone in this situation make an hour - especially considering it's a small town? I'm going back for an interview next week, and the person said I should come back with what I expect to make. I have experience with working with code that I didn't write from my software engineering classes, and I know enough web stuff to get by (I'm gonna spend the weekend brushing up on things)...what do you guys think?

My first job was in web-development. I was working in Java / XHTML / JSP / Java. That job paid about $17.50 / hour, but that's near the upper end of the range; in general I'd say to expect around $15/hour to $18/hour for a job like that.

Waterloo publishes their co-op salary numbers. First year (of job experience) averages $14~$16 / hr. for majority of students.
Latest from compsci.ca/blog: Tony's programming blog. DWITE - a programming contest.

In my first out of school job I was making a little over $16/hour, though that was a little over 11 years ago now.

I think it varies greatly from place to place, but also depends somewhat on your education and sometimes existing work. My first web dev job got me 30+ / hr but I had my undergrad, some graduate and a significant portfolio. Also the job was unionized.

my standard rate is $20 an hour - however I'm upping that to $25 an hour for the next job I do.

The lad I hired a little while back was in a pretty similar situation as you are, however he has completed a BSc in Computer Science.
He had very little experience, and is extremely anti-social.

He makes $12.50/hr.

However, If he was more social I would consider paying him up to $13.50/hr.
