How complicated to make a home network that allows you to access information on all the computers in the network?

Not very complicated at all.

Most routers theses days require very litte set up and just need to be hooked up to your computers some how (noramly threw either-net cables or wifi).

As for the software side Windows comes with what you will need to share files bulit in as do most other OSs. Sharing files between diffrent OSs on the same network can be more complciated but there are soultions out there for that too.

Some googling should get you all the information you need.

In Windows,it`s as simple as right-clicking a folder or drive and going to the sharing tab and enabling network sharing on that folder. Macs will read it just like a drive (will show up in the `places` sidebar in Finder). Dunno about Linux, though I`ll find out soon! I haven`t tried sharing on a mac to a PC yet, but it should be fairly simple.

No. You can have a router not connected to the internet and the computers can still see one another just fine. They, of course, just won't be able to access the internet if they're disconnected from it.

I hate the Windows XP file sharing. It has always been very buggy for me. I prefer to use FTP sharing because it's easy and I can access it from Mac, Linux, and Windows.
