xbox help

Hey guys,

So I've been maybe stealing internet so I can run xbox live on my 360 but we FINALLY got high speed internet, so I attempted to hook up the xbox to my own connection. Doesn't work, says it can't find an IP address. I am not in the least bit surprised, because NOTHING in my life has EVER worked first try, so I try it again, still can't find that IP address. I dust off the xbox live manual and start flipping through, it recommends enabling port forwarding, how do I do that? and if this doesn't work I'm getting a ps3, period.

ah I forgot to mention he found out (gulp) although he just knows it was someone, not me and it now has encryption

I should mention the router is a linksys model number WRT54GL

Xbox's are easy to setup. If you start it up and it doesn't connect then you run those test it is better to restart it everything resets.

The only thing to configure is NAT I wouldn't even know what ports to forward.

tried it a few times, nothing, I think my ISP has banned a range of ports so that I CAN'T connect my xbox and eat up all the bandwidth -.- bastards.

I don't think your ISP would ban XBL. They would be losing a lot of customers. I think you have to open a port on your router because I think (not 100%) that your router has a built in firewall and automatically blocks certain ports by default. You have to go to 192.168.0.1 or whatever it is for your router and find the port settings. If you screw anything up, you should be able to just press reset or you can just disable the port again. BTW, don't yell at me if anything happens. I'm not 100% sure this is how it works.

no... I called them ... it's banned. My neighbour runs a home business, so he has a really deluxe and expensive internet package, that was why it worked before, but with my connection I am essentially being bent over the table by motorola... well, I'll get them back... no company EVER screws me over and gets away with it

it's hard to believe that any ISP would survive with such a strategy; considering that the tech industry is driven by gamer's market. Cancel the subscription and find someone who violates net neutrality less.

this is the only ISP available for miles Tony, or I would have done it by now, they offer the upgrade to Live for an extra $35 a month, which is not happening, as they're already like i said earlier, bending me over the table with high charges
(It's $85 a month, plus $600 because we had to put up a tower for a signal)

but my brother, who has a Wii, gets a signal somehow, so I'm getting a ps3, hopefully problem solved

failwhale. I guess they can pull of shit like that simply because there is no-one else in the area. You could try to figure out how to forward ports via your router. Or try to get some support out of Microsoft for bypassing this issue.

I don't understand how switching consoles is going to make connecting to a network any easier. If you can't get the xbox to work, what makes you think the ps3 will work any better?

yea...you will have teh same problem....

what you can do
if you have a router...dust off the manual and access the router controols

figure out what ports the Xbox needs open and open them in the router controol pannel.

not the most difficult thing to do, but can be a pain because the menus on routers aren't easy to follow.
