Hi, I'm a Vancouver girl who is currently a froshie at UWaterloo. I'm considering transferring for much the same reasons (and additional ones such as my abhorring of east coast weather and financial concerns) as the person in this thread, and I'm wondering, how are the reputations of the universities in BC for computer science? (I'm particularly considering UBC and UVic. I can live at home at UBC, and my family rents out a house near UVic, so I could share a house with my best friends.) How are the COOP programs? Thanks! |

Just out of curiosity, what exactly is wrong with the weather on the "east coast"? |

Simon Fraser is pretty good for Computer Science, IIRC. UBC and U Vic. I think are a bit lower on the overall scale though certainly still good schools.
The weather here in Calgary isn't that great either, ya know. |

Reports from Vancouver from someone I know suggest that they're getting rather crappy weather right now... so I'm actually interested in what the problem here is (Ontario that is). |

vancouver is like the florida of canada weather-wise, some winters they don't see much under 0*C. |

Heh, they describe a dusting of snow with an afternoon high of 5?C crappy weather, so it's all in your perspective. |

Vancouver's weather is a lot like Seattle where there are many cloudy days and snow causes major traffic headaches as I recall. There will be a handful or so of snowy days.
Southwestern Ontario gets snow but not the cold that the midwest of Canada, i.e. Manitoba to Alberta, gets. |

Ha, I like how you're all commenting on my snippy little complaint and my poor choice of words— "east coast." I do realize that Ontario's not as cold as Calgary, for instance, but at a mean of negative two degrees yesterday, it was still considered cold in Vancouver. It isn't just the snow, though; our summers are less hot, too. Everything is very mild, which is just the way I like it.
Anyhow, this is all besides the point. Does anyone have anything to say about SFU/UBC/UVic, or must we continue this amateur meteorology? |

I was under the impression that UBC is a fairly good school; at least from when I was still in Engineering. UBC actually entered into DARPA's Urban Challenge, while UW has not (we couldn't find a car).
That doesn't really say much about CS in particular, but I figure the two should be somewhat representative of each other. |

For CS, you may also wish to consider BCIT. |

I'm currently a 2nd year cs student at SFU and am really enjoying it. Computer classes are fun and you can take some interesting electives. Trek is awful though, vancouvers transit system is pretty bad and the fact that its at the top of a mountain doesn't help. I don't think you can really make a wrong choice here, I know people who go to each of those schools and they all seem to like it. UBC probably has the best reputation though. |

Thanks for the input everyone! I'm going to see how I survive this term, and start applying for transfers soon.
kylethegreat: Everybody everywhere complains about their transit system, so excuse me if I don't exactly consider this a factor. I've gotten used to Translink, plus you had it particularly hard this winter since SFU's always been a bad trek and nobody in the Lower Mainland knows how to deal with snow. But classes at SFU was canceled yesterday, so who knows? Hopefully the snow lets up for you all. |
