Like the title says, I'm making a game that is exactly like a multiplayer first-person shooter (eg - battlefield, medal of honor, TF2, HL2 DM, etc.) set in a futuristic battlefield. Basically, you choose your character "class" that gives you a variety of abilities/weapons/other technology and you try to kill all of your opponents, until you score eclipses them. With so many smart gamers @ compsci, I was just thinking about getting some gamer's opinions :
What "classes" should the player to be able to choose from. I came up with about 11, that I new I could customize sprites to fit to and that I thought were good. Here they are :
The Scout : the fastest unit in the game. Used for reconnaissance and assassinations. Carries dual SMGs and pistols. As well, has a life-draining knife, a invisibility generator that lets him go invisible for a certain time, and a device that lets him ignore collision of walls once per every minute or so.
The Aerial : the unit that is made for going high and raining death from above. Carries a mortar (for use above), grenades, and a missile launcher. As well as a parachute-type set of wings, and a jet-pack.
The Melee : fast and strong, can destroy opponents in close range, but has no far range. Has a sword, a sword that drains health, his fists and a hammer that can smash apart anything in its way. Also has an injection that lets him double all of his strength and speed for a minute, as well as jets that let him get close really fast.
The Demolitions Man : no special effects, just carries a lot of explosives. Has anti-tank mines, C4, trip mines, grenades, a shotgun/mortar and a one-use only nuke.
The Medic : used for support, to heal and bring back characters. Has a rifle, a heal pack, shield, revive pack and status-curing pack.
The Sniper : long distance, massive damage ambushes. Carries pistols and a sniper. Has a "clone" generator that allows the player to spawn more than one sniper to let the user cycle between them and cause ambushes with only one player.
The Engineer : used for collecting scrap metal and crafting new things. Carries mine, RPG, shotgun. Can craft a set of mech arms, set of mech legs, a suit of mech armor, a turret and a supply post.
The Heavy : a huge powerful character. Has fists that can destroy men, a energy hammer to smash buildings, a flame-thrower and a gun that charges a spinning molten steel ball fired at an opponent at high enough speeds to let a fully-charged shot go through a tank. Also has a shield that lets him take less damage and deflect projectiles when he can use it.
The Asssassin : obviously, to sneak up on enemies and kill them. Carries a knife that if the animation is run correctly, lets you instantly kill an opponent and a C4 that can be planted un-noticeably on the backs of enemies. Has invisibility generator, teleport, anti-colission like the Scout.
The Gravity Shifter : plays around with the forces of gravity. Never needs to walk on the ground, can fly. Has a gun to send out huge shockwaves that can flip boxes, or crush opponents trapped beneath two. Has a gun to create a sucking vortex that can crush people when all the sorrounding environment comes and crushes them. Also has the gravity gun from HL2.
The Trapper : used for setting traps when no one is looking. Has only a tazer that can paralyze as a weapon. But can set these traps ; blindness, wrappings come out and shoot the foes with needles, trip-mines, illusions (hallucinations), a trap that clones you and sends your clone to kill you, a trap that can suck your health, a trap that sends spikes out of the ground to pierce you and a trap that together with the blinding trap causes instant kill.
So just wanting toknow what you think of them (who to keep, get rid of, who's the best, which classes can be compressed, etc.).
And same with vehicles :
Anti-Gravity Speeder - quick and mobile, anybody can go in it. Really fast (so much so that they can make insane jumps), and machine guns.
Bulbous Tank - big and armored, the Tank of the vehicles. Very strong weapons like flame-throwers, molten-slug, or missiles.
Mobile Base - a huge thing that is like a 1 story building on treads. has sentries, turrets, weapons and even an anti-gravity speeder in it.
Nuke Sub - an underwater vehicle that launches one super-powerful missile that can completely annihilate part of a map.
Titan - a gigantic ship that is more useful than the mobile base. Has escape pods (see below), charge-laser turrets, sonar (see all map), messaging to everybody, and a weapon of mass destruction besides supply posts.
Suicide/Escape pods - a tiny egg-shaped ship. On its nose is a small laser, and on its back is a large thruster. It's main kick is in the form of a piece of explosive strapped to the nose of the ship to explode upon contact.
Generic Ship - carries 4 men. has turrets and guns. Nothing special.
Battery mech - a slow moving mech that has missile launchers for arms. can shoot buck-shot fires of missiles, shoot them like a machine gun or even guide them on their track.
Jumper mech - a bouncing, fast mech. has knives on arms for close combat. Can scale the sides of buildings, make huge leaps and run fast. Made for slashing, although it can throw its knives.
Turtle mech - try getting into its shell. Insane defense, but slow. Has weapons with long charge, but great power.

I'm thinking, how on earth do you plan to accomplish this alone? And using which language and libraries? |

I would think C++ or something that is a little more powerful and does games, but i might be wrong. As for libraries, I ran across a couple in C++ that could be used for something like this (such as Allegro), and you might be able to use jMonkeyEngine for java. (No promises on that one though.) |

@Gandalf : I don't think I'll accomplish it all. That is why I'm asking about this. most probably, it will amount to me and hundreds of hours coding.
@A/V : no, not C++. Don't bother guessing, it's not worth it. |

If you really wanna know it's . . . cough *Visual*Cough*Basic*Cough. Yeah . . .
The only parameter for this project was it had to be done in VB.
Theoretically, it can be done in VB. . .
with just craploads of work. |

So why not spend your effort on something else? Something that will be a more productive use of your time, something that is not doomed to failure, something that will more than likely turn out being more fun than this project? There are so many FPS games these days made by much larger and more experienced teams which end up... sucking.

@Gandalf : thanx for the moral support *sacrasm*. No, I think this will be fun. I did something on a similar scale last year, and it turned out perfectly. It's not a true FRS, because although almost all gameplay is the same, it is 2D. Can't really think of anything else more productive than this. I don't think it's doomed to failure, it's just I know that the scope will decrease in size : for instance, I've already decided to drop to 6 classes and 6 vehicles, so this thread is unneeded now. Since you're a mod, if you could delete this thread, that would be helpful. And yeah, if it ends up sucking then I'm sure I'll still manage to squeeze a good mark from it, and hopefully a good experience. So, yeah, I think I'll try to continue forwards.
