Hey, I have been reading the forums for a few weeks in my attempts to figure out what university I want to go to, and you all seem quite bright so I thought I would ask for some assistance from the lot of you. Applications for district scholarships are being sent in right now, and I think I need to get started soon. My councilor thinks I am a sure bet to win a decent scholarship as long as I put in something decent. Only 1 problem now; I have no idea what I should do for it. Any suggestions? Projects are supposed to take around 100 hours to complete and I have decent knowledge in Java and am trying to learn C++. |

It's pretty much the worst thing right now to do to ask 7000 complete strangers what you should do for your scholarship, especially one of this magnitude. 100 hours of work is a lot of time to commit to a project for an undergrad scholarship, so you're going to need something you know you can be motivated to do from beginning to end. What are your interests? Past projects? Prior experience? These are things you need to be asking yourself as well. |

Well I certainly don't think it's the worst thing to ask for ideas :p I have moderate programming experience, but I hope to improve that over the next few months for the CC Competition from UW. I am hoping to get into the video game industry (as cliche as it sounds) and I have done 4 small pre-alpha state games and written their respective documentation. If possible I would like to make some sort of small but functional game for this project. I just don't know what to do in terms of game style or gameplay, and obviously 100 hours isn't much time in terms of actually designing, programming, and debugging even a small game when you have as little experience as myself. |

Okay, we can narrow this down: what are your interests? What do you hope to study at University?
There is an issue that occurs to me if you plan to make a game... the judging committee may expect a more polished result than you may be capable of.
In addition, with the code, there is a lot of work with sounds and graphics. |
