This is absolutely ridiculous. So EA figures it screwed up the first attempt at sneaky DRM protection, so they try something even worse? Give me a break. Let's look at it this way, the people that are going to pirate a game, are going to pirate it no matter what. The average user is going to pirate it only if there is ridiculously low protection. Companies should really only be focusing on protection against the average user, not the hardcore pirate.

I am not surprised. The DRM on Spore is outrageous. I'm actually happy that someone is suing EA. What happened to the days when you could just install software without activations, registrations, and serial numbers?

I acuatly was going to buy spore and even bought the spore creature creator befor spore came out however after reading about the crazy DRM i diecied aginsted it. So at the very least EA's DRM has cost them my $50 (or how evet much it was going for).

Of course, they assume that $50 is just due to piracy, which is unfortunate. I do believe, however, maybe you can get your message across to the execs at EA, if you use this Finding Executive Contact Information.

As technologists, we all know the temptation to solve a problem with more technology, but in the case of DRM it is not a technical problem. It is simply a social problem, and we're trying to solve it by weighing down the coyote with a massive suit of armor, padlocks, a laser sentry, etc. Technology cannot, does not solve social problems. I acknowledge that piracy is bad. Piracy is easy. I have participated in piracy for many reasons, least of which include not even able to buy the product, or not having any money. But I don't think it is a right. Companies need to understand what their consumers /want/ and make it possible. They also need to acknowledge there will be people that they will never get money from, no matter what they do.
