How would I go about making a custom font for various text programs (if that's even possible)? I'm thinking of things like Word, WordPerfect, etc.

Yes it's possible, Google of course has the answer, for example here:
http://www.iamcal.com/misc/fonts/pixfonttut/part1.php
Assuming you're on Windows you're going to create a True Type Font and install it to WINDOWS/Fonts.

I once tried to make a font based on my handwriting, however it's extremely hard to scan with good/consistent contrast and also to align the letters properly.
