"how do you create a class in java"
and theres this student went up, and on the board he wrote
code:
public TEST{
}

the prof was like, "hmmmm, yea, that looks right, congratulations, heres your ipod!"

and everyone else agreed with the answer, i'm so sad Crying or Very sad

Ouch. That sounds really bad.

It's bad enough that they teach Java, they don't even teach it right.

I'm glad UW teaches Scheme.

oh yeah, i forgot to mention that when i called them to ask what programming languages they will teach, this is what the computer science reception woman told me
"oh, we will be teaching java, some c, oh and also c plus plus, and let see here.... unix, yea and unix"
me: Shocked

hey im not complaining, the location here is awesome!

I think it is imporent to note that Computer Science is not programming langue syntax (unless you are making the programming langue) and the compsci profs are not expertes in knowing a langues syntax but are knowanble in there feild of research.

As for java it deftaly would be bad if they only used java or used java for cources like data structers. However simpley using java in a corse to teach object oriented conceptes or concecpts that are indenent of the langue then i don't see the problem. The prof should use the best langue to express the main conspects of the course, the easest for the studetns to use or make it langue indpented and leave the langue choice up to the student to decied what they want to implment there soultions in.

As for the "reception woman", they probly where hired for the ablitys as a receptionest and not there computer science background. Tho she could have ment shell scripts or an OS class where you make programs for unix like a shell.

Just playing the devils advocate :p

We do have some resources for that

Java, C++ and ?other in-demand programming languages?

Object oriented is introduced in first year (2 courses) using Java. First year also introduces UNIX (shell scripted included), and C.

C, C-plus-plus, UML, SmallTalk is taught for second year

3/4th years teach a variety on languages depending on the courses you take. But almost all students have to take courses which teach Prolog and Ruby.

I was accepted to Ryerson computer science with an eighty something percent. No idea about the average, that's just my case.

Transfer later if you think the quality of teaching is not up to stuff.

well as Dan pointed out, the "reception woman" is not the one teaching you course material. And Ryerson does list "UNIX" as something that is taught during intro CS courses.

You will find that most of the students will have had no prior experience with any form of *nix. A lot of them will have trouble with it.

A lot of them will switch to a different major.

Believe it or not, but I've found this out as well. So many folks drop out of CS in the first or second year, it's really sad. Then again, half of the ones that drop out never really belonged in there in the first place, the other half thought it would be as easy as highschool CS. I suppose a few just wanted to play games.

What's an average EE/CE major's course work like compared to an average CS major?
