PostPosted: Thu Jul 10, 2008 12:08 pm   Post subject: Video File Help

I have a JVC camcorder, and I have a problem that many people have.
The video files are saved with .Mod rather than anything useful.

In many forums, I've seen that a simple renaming to movie.wmv or anything else, solves the problem.
Well it doesn't. when I try and play it in windows media player, it says it cannot play the file because it has been formatted with an unsupported codec.

How can I fix this?
If any of you know of a free converter program, that doesn't leave a water mark, or limit the video time (my old one used to limit the video to 5 minutes) let me know.
Thanks for any help.

you cannot change it to wmv because its not a wmv, but an mpeg-2. so renaming as MPG or AVI would actually work.

Just attempted to name it to movie.avi.

Same problem as before

MPG was my first attempt, and then wmv, and now avi.
and all come up with the same error.

You sure this file isn't corrupt? Have you tried with several files?

Also, http://filext.com/file-extension/mod

EDIT: I'll also add http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/ and there's also http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

Don't run the scans from filext. Just use the site to tell you what an ext is about.

Use mediacoder or SUPER to convert media files. Also, look at the product support page for you camera. It may be defective. Can you playback the videos on your camera?

Yes, I can play back files on my camera, so hopefully that means it is working.

Changing the filetype to .avi isn't working either.
Maybe I'll just convert all my files.
Thanks Aziz.
I'll see if I can get either one of those converters.

edit. thanks for the links

I feel stupid because after clicking download super, it takes me to this chart to download from, and I dont know how, or which one to download. Sad

Their site is retarded, and they've hidden the download link close to the bottom of the page after all the tables in blue writing it says "Download SUPER ? setup file". I would post a direct link to it, but they have it set up so that if you do that it wont let you download it so you actually have to click it from their webpage. If you still have trouble I will save the file on my webspace so you can download it right from there.

Wow, I found the download link. I click on it and it seems like it just refreshes the page or something..
