PostPosted: Sun Jun 01, 2008 10:30 pm   Post subject: CS @ Ryerson

sadly, I didn't get to where I wanted to be for my post secondary education (waterloo), because I'm not good enough for them, or they are too good for me.

but I'm actually more glad that I was rejected Very Happy because I will be studying at downtown Ryerson! where it is
  • smaller class size (less competition, therefore more money for me!)
  • location (i mean it is downtown after all, and plus is right beside Eaton, how can you get bored)
  • cost less since i don't have to go with campus and can just use the public transit

but i am thinking of transferring to UW after 1st year at Ryerson, but that will be a maybe, since I do want to compare myself with UW first year students, to see how well I'm doing before I make this decision. but let's say if i do transfer, does anyone have any idea what will help me do this (marks? reference?)?

and lastly is anyone else going to Ryerson? I see a lot of waterloo students here, but not so much for Ryerson... Confused (which is a good news for me Razz )

oh and if any current/past Ryerson student can give me a short intro on Ryerson cs, it would be really awesome. Thanks!

ps. i've been tempted to say some rude things to those people kept on making post about their high 90s overall and worried about going to waterloo cs... and i held back.... go me...!! *sigh* no hard feelings, i was worried too Rolling Eyes

I'm not too sure but I don't think you should have much problems transferring. All the fuss is really just in the high-school -> university transition.

I have a few friends in Ryerson. They like it there. Smile

On the contrary, it is incredibly difficult to transfer from a different University. Heck, it's difficult to transfer faculties within Waterloo itself. My original request for a transfer from UW Engineering into UW Math has been rejected, and in the process of discussing alternatives a subject of University transfers has came up. I was told that I would not be considered if I was to apply from Ryerson.

Now this should not be taken as a hard fact, but keep in mind a few things. University courses should transfer well within Ontario, for equivalent classes, but UW has a unique program. It will be more so this Fall, as the new Scheme curriculum rolls out. I don't mean to discourage you from this pursuit, just be prepared for some administrative red tape.

There's also a short review posted on /blog

Well as we say here, over and again, is that the University experience is what you make of it. UW vs. Ryerson will certainly be a different experience, but that doesn't have to mean that you are worse or better off with either, unless you make it that way. From the short review I've done for the blog, it looks like Ryerson covers and variety of languages, all the important subjects, and even has courses that UW doesn't offer. It's less abstraction and Math, but it's more on the practical side of things -- which could work out to your advantage.

At least one Ryerson professor, Dave Mason, did his PhD at Waterloo -- and used Scheme in a first-year course there seven years before Waterloo did.

Yeh, I go to Ryerson.

Doing Undergrad in Computer Science - 4th year.

I'm interested in Ryerson's Comp. Sci program as well. The cut-off for them is 70-74% and they only accept around 125 people. I'm pretty sure most people admitted to the program would have much higher than the 70-74% required, but do you have any idea of what the averages of the people are that have been accepted at Ryerson for Comp Sci? (Ali_dada, or anybody else). I'm sitting at about a 74-76% average, any need to be worried about not getting in? Thanks.

@FreshPrince: that avg is probably based on last year's entrance averages. I can't really answer your question , but i have a feeling that ryerson's decision for you will come pretty late. here's my reasoning:

looking at the entrance avg, waterloo's cs and related subjects seems to have an entrance avg 10%ish higher than most other universities. this means that if one were to apply to waterloo, he would also apply to ut, ryerson, etc for backups. Now, these are the kids with a high 80s, low 90s avg, who cant get early acceptance from uw. eventually, their backups will come, but they will not accept their offers till they hear from uw, which is pretty late (next month maybe?) when they reply to their backups, then, the queue would move up and you will hear from ryerson.

so, all in all, be patient. And don't worry - instead of worrying, take action and boost your marks up this semester then you'll be more confident, right?

btw how did you know how many people get accepted? Do you know how many people apply? Do you have this data for other universities?

I hope I get in...I got an 83% average and it is my second choice behind Waterloo...but I don't plan on going to Waterloo because I will have to live on campus which is expensive

Ryerson was the first university to accept me for computer science. I had an average around what yours is, Dark. This was a few years ago mind you.

I think I got in to Ryerson with an avg of 78? So I think Dark you should be fine. I also agree with you regarding the cost, I find the tuition here at Ryerson is fairly alright, my OSAP is just enough to cover for 1 year (which is about 5k)

Regarding the people they accepted last year, I think my class (first year computer science) have about 130-160 people to start off with, now its about 100ish, which is normal.

On a side note here, Ryerson will have a computer programming club next year, should be lots of fun Wink

Yeah, I got accepted into Ryerson today actually. Mr. Green But I thought I was guaranteed an 80 average scholarship but there isn't any scholarship details under my acceptance...:S
