TIOBE List of Languages Popularity Contest

I think they are close; if you only count "open" (as in not-secret) source. In the grand scheme of running banks, pipelines, hospitals, armies, bob loblaw; ... Java is not the number one, imho. Smile

Err... Other way around. Smile

I was surprised mostly by the apparent popularity of D as well as the increase in the use of Visual Basic.

Oh man, how did I read that wrong. Well... I'm happy now. Very Happy

I would have thought Ada would be a little higher on the list...

Interesting also seeing Scheme ahead of COBOL... All those students and academicians must talk more than all those maintenance programmers out there Razz

Most of the COBOL code in existence is running in closed-source environments that are so far from public view that many people forget that they exist (if people knew it'd be replaced Wink ). Same with FORTRAN and possibly Ada.

I'm shocked that Pascal appears nowhere on the list.

Pascal as far as most are concerned is synonymous with Delphi, and that's by and large closed source. Sad.

What caught my eye; D, Ch, REBOL (woohoo 51 to 100, woohoo!), well, and that Java was top. Disagree. Disbelieve.

BUT; I will say that this is probably a really good list for picking a path with pay.

Cheers

Judging from how they claim they rank languages, I would put little weight on their findings.

That being said, Java is my favorite language followed by C++ so I have little reason to complain. I will probably pick up D some time once its code base matures a bit.

It's there, you just missed it. It jumped from 21 to 15. The amount of the jump surprised me.

D is quite mature at this point.

I'm just adding a mee too. I like D, and when you can be involved in talking to the designer, just adds sweet.

Anyone that wants to, check out the digitalmars.com site and follow the newsgroup threads. Walter chats quite a bit, and seems to care about user input. And this from a fairly large scale user base. Walter Bright. Good guy. Good programming environment.

I'm surprised that Visual Basic is so high, considering it only runs on Windows and that support is going to get dropped for it very soon. It's 3rd!

Visual Basic made it so quick and easy to write applications that a ton of them were developed. The fact that it runs on Windows only doesn't matter, as it's mostly used for enterprise applications -- nobody really cares about OSX or Linux there.

Are you sure support is going to get dropped for it very soon? Do you mean VB6? I see VB.NET living on for a long time still despite the fact that it's stupified C# syntax now with a better platform.

Disclaimer: I am in no way encouraging the use of VB6 by anybody. If you suddenly feel the urge to write anything in VB6, please visit your nearest therapist as they will be able to assist you more than I can.
