Not really. It's just to show how active and helpful you are. People donate bits for great contributions, and usually offer a + as well.

Karma is mainly, was your post effective, relevant and something that caught our eyes, then they are most likly going to give you a plus to your karma.

A negative would result in copying another post, and irrelevant posts.

Bits are the currency that we use on Compsci, however Mackie said that 500 gets you a rank change, is that true?
