I have a lot of issues with this. I do not have the engine required to run Rar files (the word is engine, right?). What software do I need to run these? Is it a free download? The Windows Live Search doesn't work for me.

7-zip is a great free tool.

Furthermore, you probably should use Google Wink

7-zip is a good tool. You can also use winRAR since it is their format you're trying to use, through they will bug you about upgrading.

Personally I use TUGzip.

Um, for 7-zip, should I get the .exe version or the .msi version?

Download 7-Zip 4.57 (2007-12-06) for Windows:
.exe 32-bit 840 KB
.msi x64 1103 KB

If you're going by those links on the 7-zip front page, the .msi file is for 64bit versions of Windows. If you don't know what you have, stick with the .exe.

It's a source of constant amazement that what are to me such trivial tasks are to others mind bogglingly complex.

It says 32-bit and x64. That should be kinda of a hint, should it not?

you could always just try each one, its not your computer is going to explode, probably would have been much quicker than having to ask on the forums Razz

It was an observation, nothing more.

But the whole 32-bit and 64-bit thing is a pretty big give away. Oh, and there are plenty of other operating systems besides Windows and OS X.

Windows on its own comes in a dozen different flavours. Of the ones that are still used, there's 2000, XP, and Vista. Each has a matrix of different subsets (home, pro, ultimate, etc) and architectures (32 or 64 bit).

And, as md points out, besides all that pile (and already mentioned OS X), there's a order of magnitude more variations of Linux, Unix, BSD, Solaris, etc. + all the mobile devises Wink

If you want to open Rar files on a Windows PC, Tech-Pro.net recommends Bit Zipper 2009. Bit Zipper 2009 is the best Windows archive manager available. It can open Rar files, As well as allowing you to open all these file types, It's also a fast and flexible backup tool. So it's something you will find useful for a lot more tasks than opening the occasional Rar archive.

richermartyn, we all appreciate your help, but you have to stop necroposting, especially if the question has been answered.

Lol, Rar files haven't been an issue in AGES (I'm allowed to post this, as I'm the OP. God, I was clueless then). On OSX I use RaRExpander, on Windows WinRar is is there, and on Linux...Well, I haven't encountered RaR's on Linux yet, though I have a feeling most distro's come with something.

lol..'Engine'. That's totally not the write word. ('Extractor' more likely)

Anyway, that post was a year and a half ago. Reminds me how far I've come, and how far I've yet to go. Awesome.
