I just came back from a long drive today and it was very stressful. I was just wondering what you guys would do (passenger or driver) for a long drive to help with stress and exhaustion and also being bored.

music mainly also if you are a passenger it helps to have a notebook for sketching/programming ideas

I solve tough math equations, just for fun. That or count how many blue cars there are, and see if the current number I'm at is prime. Though I give up after 58-ish.

Seriously, stop linking xkcd for everything. STOP! Yes it's a good comic; but those who care already read it! We *know* all the comics and can certainly find them ourselves!

Now then... I drive long distances fairly often; mostly I'm not bothered by it at all, but music definitely helps. Also, if your the one driving it *really* pays to get your seat adjusted properly. In my old car that was impossible (broken seat) but in the new one I have it so that sitting in the seat my back is to the seat everywhere and the headrest is actualy against my head. It's amazing how much of a difference it makes when your back is strait and your relaxed.

I read, listen to music, talk to other passengers (I know, a shock!), play on my DS, daydream or even code on my laptop. How does this help with stress? It stops me from going insane from boredom! Razz

For me, while driving ridiculous distances, music is key. It doesn't have to be loud, just something to cover up the drone of everything else. Also, make sure you're comfortable. Nothing is worse than being cold or sweaty while driving. Even still, 9 hours at the wheel with 15 minutes stops for drive-thru/bathroom breaks is killer.

When I drove to the florida keys (3 of us) I slept when it wasn't my turn driving, although that was a little different I suppose....
The rest of the time I spent driving or eating beef jerky.

It was roughly a 26hour drive.

I agree that music is key, but having someone to talk to helps. Best if it's someone you're good friends with, like driving w/ you buddy or girl. When I drive home from work at night I'm usually on the phone with my girlfriend (headset, of course).

And if it's just you and your mate you can find plenty of creative things Wink. Try playing scrabble :O (what'd you think?)

Wait a second here... other passengers? How could you allow other people into your car? They might get it dirty!

/me also notes that the only long distance driving he does involves going to see his GF; which is naturally something that passengers really aren't wanted for

What would you guys consider "long distance". Such as the ride to your woman's, md?

Well, from ottawa it's between 8 and 9 hours to get to her house. I actually have no issues driving it at all; I the only bad part is the drive through toronto (and that's because of traffic).

When I hear people complain about long drives I always think 15+ hour trips; ones where you really are in a car all day.

But if you guys think you have it bad on long drives, try driving a jeep with no roof for 9 hours strait. The road noise is so loud that by the time you get anywhere you have trouble hearing people talk. In order to distract yourself from the noise you have to turn your music up so loud that when you stop for gas you think you might get a ticket for it being too loud (I was actually asked by cops to turn it off more then once). Oh, and the sunburn is killer; as is the ~40 degree heat that you can't get away from. Now THAT is a horrible drive.

my car doesn't have A/C Smile

The longest I've ever driven was 5 hours to niagara falls, and about the same to sauble beach.

The niagara falls trip was horrible because I had just got home from work (1 hour trip). I worked at a desk job and my back had been killing me all day.

I'm a very uncomfortable person. Especially since the car fits smaller folk better.
