When I attempt to install the 7.04 version it says:

"Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface). It is likely it is not set up properly."

What Caused this problem? I never had this problem before when installing 6.06 or 6.1

I've had this issue before as well, if you can ftp up a copy of your Xorg.0.log (in /var/log) we may be able to help better. For now, I suggest you just keep on trying to restart and see if it'll start X properly.

i don't have Ubuntu on this computer yet. When I said "I never had this problem before when installing 6.06 or 6.1" I meant running from the live cds

Indeed, chances are your old xorg.conf (in /etc/X11/, post it too!) was overwritten.

Do you have odd display equipment? Maybe a widescreen monitor or something?

Edit: Upon reading your response, I'm convinced that X just isn't setting itself up correctly. If you're running the LiveCD on the computer with your install already on there, you can mount your main partition, copy the xorg.conf file over and overwrite the copy that's in memory from the CD... I think.

Though if you're just upgrading, you can use the apt-get dist-upgrade method.

If it's just from running the LiveCD, it may be that your image is damaged in some way. Try downloading another copy and burning that and trying it and see if that works.

I've tried, I have tried three different copies. None of them worked. And yes I have a widescreen, How would that affect the install?

And whats xorg.conf ?

xorg.conf is the configuration file that configures your X server on your computer (the graphical engine). If something's wrong, it's going to be in there.

In /etc/xorg.conf to be exact. Worst case, you may want to try plugging in a monitor to install, then set the appropriate resolution before switching back to the laptop display.

Though I will agree that it really sucks. This is one of the reasons why I preferred the old Ubuntu installer.

EDIT: well, I guess the location of the file was already mentioned. Yeah, I feel a bit dumb about it.

My fancy widescreen monitor killed X for Gparted. I guess the person who wrote the xorg.conf forgot that a number of people have that type of monitor now-a-days.

Really though, does this computer already have an old version of Ubuntu installed? If so, you can avoid all this LiveCD crap and do it from there.

If you have a second computer around the one you're trying to install Ubuntu on, click on the link at the top entitled "Chat Room" and you'll find a few Ubuntu users in there. We'll be able to help you a lot faster there. Just introduce yourself and we'll know who you are.
