As I'm sure many of you know, Feisty Fawn was released today. You can download the images from a mirror here. Alternatively I'll provide steps below for upgrading. Apparently this release shows improved support for wireless and is even easier to use than previous versions.
From the Ubuntu site:
Go to System -> Administration -> Software Sources. If you have a previous version of Ubuntu installed, you should upgrade to each newest version in turn, following the upgrade notes for each newer version.
Click "Check"
Click "Install Updates"
Wait for the process to complete
Click"Close"
Start Update Manager again to begin the upgrade to 7.04
Real men do it this way:
$ sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
Replace all occurences of "edgy" with "feisty".
Save the file.
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Reboot.
Of course some of the steps above can be done with your editor of choice or even a simple command, but still.
Ship-It CDs are also available to those with crappy connections, though you can expect about a 10 week wait for them to arrive.
Anybody with Feisty running have any comments? Aside from Clayton who seems to have messed up his laptop of course.

I'm not a big fan of the dist-upgrade approach. I've heard of people getting screwed over by it before, and I like clean (mostly clean, I keep most of my settings) installs anyways. Not to mention I've been getting weak ass download speeds from the repositories lately.
I'll probably go ahead and try Gentoo again on my laptop once I'm done with finals.

Only reason they get screwed is because they don't change all occurances like instructed. Hell, I've done a dist-upgrade from Debian 3.1 to Ubuntu 6.10... albeit it did not go so smoothly . Since it was just released, I'm sure many of the mirrors are overloaded.

I'll help you with that... just make sure I'm around when you begin the install.

If you want to SSH in and do the whole install yourself I'd be totally cool with that.

It was not me! Honest! Other than the issues we talked about though, I haven't really had any problems at all with Feisty. It works wonders with my wireless card, which I've had problems with all other releases. And it just seems a little bit easier to use than previous releases of Ubuntu.

Already ordered 15 for the CS club here (albeit it's very small).
EDIT: If you want, you could SSH into my machine too and install Gentoo for me It didn't go so well last night

I'm a big fan of Arch Linux lately, but it's not for everyone. Ubuntu is a fantastic mainstream Linux.

I installed Feisty yesterday and I'm impressed with it. Until now I was stuck using Windows because I couldn't get my wireless network running on any distro of Linux. But with Feisty, it was detected instantly on first startup without me having to do anything. one problem I found with it though is that the desktop effects don't work. When I turn them on my entire screen just goes white, a problem that many other people are having.

Yes, wireless worked seamlessly for me too under Feisty. The Desktop Effects weren't working for you you say? Funny, seeing as they worked fine for me. What are your system specs?

My specs should be plenty good enough. 1GB Ram, Pentium 4 2.4 GHz processor. Judging by this I'd say the problem is my ATI graphics card.

I just installed this OS a few days ago. I also installed Windows a few months ago.. The only thing easier about the Windows install, was setting up my sound card.
With Windows, I had to go on my computer manufacturers website and find my computer to get specific drivers for my video card and keyboard. To install my sound card and usb wireless adaptor, I had to install the drivers from the cd.
With Ubuntu, the video card, keyboard, and wireless adaptor were working to their full potential immediately. The sound card was and still is a pain the ass (sound comes out, just not through all channels).
I'm going to say, installing Ubuntu was definitely easier than Windows. The Ubuntu install process was visual and interactive, and it set up my hardware and peripherals automatically.
If I were to bash Ubuntu, I would say... hmm... oh! Why can't the synaptic installer thing download the NetBeans file for me. It gives me instructions on how to do it (exact links and everything), but why can't it just do it. The instructions are right there!!!
Desktop effects doesn't work for me either. It is just a blank white screen. I also have and ATI card, but it is a built-in piece of crap.

Sometimes companies don't let their packages be installed automatically. In the case of Gentoo, some ebuilds require you to copy over the package sources into a certain directory before it will install it.

There's your problem. ATI has horrible drivers for everything, especially Linux.

right.. thats why they're about 30% more stable than NVIDIA ones.

I think the name of the game here is Linux support.

no, the "especially linux" part was for linux, the "ATI has horrible drivers for everything" was pretty generic to me.

Qualitative observation on my part. The Linux support is a huge problem, though.
