anything but Turing is free. Try Ruby

Not everything other than Turing is free. I don't know for sure, but I'm pretty sure Visual Basic also isn't free.

Another good programming language, which is also similar to Ruby is Python

Actually Nick, I think there is a free version of visual basic called visual basic express. It's just a version of vb that doesn't have all the tools a professional would need such as the exe compiler. I also would like to know if anyone here has tried Gentee Programming Language and it's free. I'd just like a recomendation on it if anyone has tried it.

Here's the link: http://www.gentee.com/

If i rember right blue jay is an IDE not a progaming lanuge. Java is the progaming langue, blue jay is just an editor for it.

Most progaming lanuges output to the console by defualt. To draw pictures and such you need to use the APIs or libbrays that are provied to creat a window or area that can be draw to.

The visual langues by M$ all do this by defualt, tho i strongly remcomend you not learn on them.

BlueJ is indeed simply a Java IDE. I suggest simply using a decent text editor (Notepad is not in this class) with line numbers and syntax highlighting. Pair that with the command-line tools and you have an ideal learning environment.

You can open up another screen and animate things quite easily with Python using PyGame. I am currently working on a PyGame tutorial and will try to have it finished soon.

if drawing, animating, and such is more of your thing, and you just want to throw in a little bit of programming in there for some interaction, then Flash with ActionScript might be something to consider.
