I'm not exactly sure where to ask this. Does anyone know any good cloning programs that I can use to clone my hard drive? And if I clone my hard drive and use the hard drive in another computer will it still work properly or will there be issues? |

May I ask why you are wanting to do this? |

on *nix dd will do it no problem, an exact mirror of your drive. Windows I'm not sure what you could use... if you even can do it from windows.
The chances of it working on a different computer (assuming you run windows) is pretty small however. Unless you're running identical hardware on both machines you'll most likely run into problems; never mind the legal implications.
If on the otherhand you run a *nix installation; so long as you have the right drivers in your kernel for the new system you should be fine moving the mirrored drive, free of any legal implications. |

what you're looking for is a disk imaging software, something like norton ghost. you can obtain a bootable version on cd or floppy, and it will let you make an exact backup of your hdd.
In general, system drives are not swappable for different mobos, but in rare occurances, it can be done. |

Well I want to do this because my older computer quite on me so my uncle helped me make a new computer but I can't use the old hard drive went on the old computer. I want to clone my parents' computer hard drive on a drive that will be my main drive on my computer and I'll have a separate drive to save all my files and the main hard drive will be my parents backup drive. So I just wanted to know of any problems with doing this and I have all the instalation disks for all the new hard ware so will I be able to use the clone drive in another computer? |

Well it sounds like you have a complicated situation there. I've found another imaging program you might want to also look into. It's called Achronis the link is below.

Sounds to me like just getting a new drive and installing windows etc. from scratch is what would suit you best. trying ot use things for backups and such just won't work; and if you try bad thigns will happen. |
