i saw jet li's "Fearless" last last weekend, awsome movie..10/10..i like to watch all kinds of movies mainly sci-fi,comedy and martial arts based movies ..but fearless is certainly worth seeing because not only is it good, its based on a true story.Most of the events that take place in the movie actually happened, like when jet li fights the wrestler "Hercules" from USA

Actually yeah, the fighter fighting "Hercules" is about all that is based on the true story. The filmmakers took some considerable liberties with the script.

I didn't find it to be that enjoyable; it seemed fragmented, and slow. And Jet Li wasn't a convincing young, arrogant fighter. I'd give it 6.5/10 at best. Certainly not the best martial arts movie out there by any means.

If you want to see some good Asian cinema, go out and get a copy of anything that Kurosawa ever did. You may want to start with Seven Samurai to understand his style, then move to something like Yojimbo or Kagemusha, Rashomon, The Hidden Fortress, or The Bad Sleep Well (very good.) If you like Shakespeare (Macbeth in particular,) Samurai's and movies with kick-ass names, check out Throne of Blood of too.

If Kurosawa's style isn't something your into (which would be a pity) then get John Woo's The Killer or Hard Boiled. If you don't like those I don't even know what to say.

(None of these are really "martial arts," so to speak, just some great films to come out Asia.)


And since you saw Fearless, you may find yourself yearning to see Tony Jaa's The Protector, but don't. For real save your money and watch Ong Bak again, its a much more satisfying use of your time.

I love Seven Samurai! I'd love to see another of his movies. Though I am rather pressed for time, here. Of these movies you've listed (excluding Seven Samurai), which would you recommend most?

Better yet, list them in decreasing order, since chances are pretty low that I can get any of them. UW's intranet is awesome and all, but they don't have many older films.

For Sci-fi lovers there are any number of good movies

The island, GATACA, K-PAX, Serenity, etc. All good movies and fairly recent. Then there are classics like Forbidden Planet (staring Leslie Neilson and not a comedy!) or Tron.

Just general good movies: V for Vendetta, Wallace and Gromit = The curse of teh were-rabbit, Lucky Number Sleven, 16 Blocks; all good movies.

Unfortunately this summer's movies have all been pretty bad imho.

Have you seen 1984? Another movie that is sort of similar is Equilibrium. It's got a lot of action (it's action is better than the Matrix's action, I think) and yet it actually has an interesting story: mankind has developed a substance that can surpress all emotion. How does society change?

Actually, The Thirtienth Floor (mentioned earlier) is similar to the Matrix as well, with the idea of jacking into a virtual system. This one has less action and far more thought, in my opinion. Way better than the Matrix.

1984... movie? Was it any good? I didn't much care for the book's ending, which is (part of) why I liked Equilibrium. I also like V for Vendetta if you're trying to say that it's bad (unless 1984 is supposed to be really good).
