My girlfriend's sister got hacked (or so that's her story) and the computer shut down, and now won't even boot up. It goes right from pressing the power button to

NTLDR is missing.
Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart.

on a black DOS screen. (no prompt)

Now, she says she was playing an online RPG, Maydisle, and she reported a guy for something, he got banned, and threatened to hack her, then this happen and aparantly he was on her MSN. I don't really care what happened or how unless it helps me fix it, because my lady can't play Sims, and that isn't good (for me or her, upset woman = trouble lol). So, any clue folks? So I don't have to reformat? Sad

NTLDR is an abbreviation for NT Loader. Its job is to boot up your computer.

If it's missing, you can get it back. I'm assuming you're using XP. Now to quote:

1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
5. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
6. Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter "E". This letter may be different on your computer.

copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

7. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

It's also the same for win2k. I'd then go and remove admin permissions from the sister... that'll prevent her from getting said files deleted again.

And I imagine teaching her about the Internet couldn't hurt. Really just what kinds of things to be suspicious of.

I don't know what she did. Anyways, I googled it and found the solution Smile Thanks guys though. I'm going to hook them up with some sort of Internet Security or even a firewall. Other than that, she's 15 and won't listen.
