this is really wierd. why can't i open java files? the only way i could open them is by opening them in notepad and then copy and paste the code into blue J. and then compile it. even the files i save on my own computer that i made i can't open them unless i open Blue J and then open my own files.

You might have to do that again but click on browse or something like that and use file explorer to find the .exe of BlueJ...

There should be a checkbox on the dialog where you click browse that says "always use this program" or something to that effect and there should be a check there...

thanks that resolves the issue with opening my own files. although i still can't open files that others made. for example if u go to java submissions and try to open tic tac toe. it only opens as a text file and i have to copy and paste the code into BlueJ. even if i say open in BlueJ it will open a previous program i made or a blank program.
