Posted: Fri Mar 03, 2006 5:37 pm Post subject: DreamHost Coupon Code (The Best Hosting)
As some of you may know CompSci.ca's host is www.dreamhost.com witch has been realy good to us so far, probly one of the best hosts i have seen. We got losts of good deals and cool/free stuff from them. Any how we now have a plan that will get CompSci.ca Members some of thos deals with $50 off any hosting plan that is payed by year (or 2 years) and at least $20 off any plan payed by month.
The Promo code is: COMPSCI
There basick hosting has the flowing at $7.95 per month:
Space - 20 GB (+160 MB per week)
Bandwith - 1TB (+8 GB per week)
MySql Dbs - Unlimited
Free Domain
UNLIMITED hosted domains and sub domains
PHP, ruby on rails, webmail, shell acess and much much more....
Now you maybe asking what compsci.ca gets out of all this. Well for each member who sings up with that promo code we get about $20~$50 towords our hosting (the money is sent directly to the host so no scaming). If you use this link http://www.dreamhost.com/r.cgi?hackerdan and no promo code you can give your deal to compsci.ca and we get about $100 off our hosting.
For the most part i am posting this b/c it is just a good host and peoleop are allways asking me for good hosts, the money for us is just a side effect.
It can only be used for hosting, upgrading services and donating to charity if we have to much moeny (when dose any one have to much?). Tho i whould just like to say that we are not dieing out or anything and if u do not donate we will still be around for along long time (i hope at least). This is just in case any one is one of thos poor peoleop with "too much moeny" and needs a litte "help" with that problem.

Hmm any hidden charges/ scams? If something is too good to be true, it probably is.

How are they for support? Like, how quickly do they respond to support requests? Are the responses helpful?
Have you had any problems with them? I remember you talking about strange folders being created in your space before.
How long will this promo be good for? If it's as good as it sounds, and it helps compsci.ca, I'm sure I could move my hosting over when my current contract expires.
I'm currently hosted with ASO. They have amazing support and I've had no problems so far.

We use this host, there are no scams, the only thing i could posiably think of is that affter 2 years (if u sing up for the 2 year one) you can not use the prom code b/c u are all ready singed up.....obvesly.

Exatmly good support, they aucatly have repared problem that where only realting to compsci.ca b4 i knew they existed. They have an admzaing back up ploicy, probly the best i have ever seen. I all ways get replys back in less then 24hours unless it is an odd time of year like xmass. The only complaint i have is that some of the instant installed software packged like media wiki could have secuity falws, but that is not there falut and they say they could have falws when u install them. Obvesly they do not suport other peoleops software other then the server runing it part.
They have a suport fourm, wiki and knogale base. Live chat, e-mail and u get x phone calls per moth based on your plan.
Also they have an RSS feed on the curet status of all servers and even the smallest problem is report there live. Also thye have a blog that dose the same but slowly.

This is a problem that all shared hosts have. Since you are all hosted on the same server if your permisions are not set right others can look at your files. If you have a file with a password in it that is not set right they can see that (obvesly). In the case you talk about, i used one of there quick installs and it did not set the permsiions right on a config file. This is not there fault but media wiki's...

The way it works is you get $50 off hosting payed inadanvce for over a year. And you get $20 (i blive) off hosting payed per moth. Affter u have to pay again u can not use a promo code since u are all ready singed up.
For hosting a year and over there is no set up fees however for mothly payed there is a one time setup fee. Thess codes do not exiper intill i say so or compsci.ca stops hosting with them.
If you just whont to help compsci.ca and do not care about hosting i will be realsing a donation system soon that donates moeny directly to our hosting costs and i can not effect it.

I whould sugested you do not chage then, i say once u find a good host that you like stay with them b/c they do not come around offten. This post/deal/offer is just sposted to give members an idea of what a good host could be since i get asked so much on msn, pms and other + give them a deal on it + help compsci.ca
I whould also like to say that in the event that we rasies more moeny then we need it whould go in upgrading the host more, funding a new CompSci.ca realted project or to charity. The hosting donatinons system maybe not be around intill v3 unless poelop realy whont it. Perosanly i am a litte unconfotmerable taking donations and find this to be a win win win method since the user gets hosting, a deal on it and we get money.
Edit: Aucatly for now there is a simple donation system if u realy whont: http://www.dreamhost.com/donate.cgi?id=4009. As it says even if i whonted to scam you all and run away with the money i can not

They also have this sugestion system that i love. You can sugested almost anything incudling lowering pirce on some services and then it is posted to a fourm of sugestions almost where users can vote on them. Each user only gets so many voting points. Affter x amount of time they take the top sugestions and do them if possiable and if they do them or remove the sugestion u get your voting points back.
Also they have a nice referal and awards system as you can see from this topic, as well as alowing for donations threw them and donation to charity if u whont (ie. if u have to much moeny).

Frankly, this deal looks too good to be true. I'm not making any comments about any duplicity on Dreamhost's part - I would just make note of the fact that the last webhost I saw offering a deal that good went out of business in about half a year. Just a good thing to remember.

Well they are CompSci.ca's host, it is not like i am pormoting a host that i have not used. They have been around for some time and to my understanding are one of the bigest hosts around making millions. I do not think they are going anywhere soon.

Oh I realise. However, there was a hosting company called DDGHosting that went bankrupt in about July 2005 - this was roughly a year after they introduced an amazing new deal that worked the same way as this - a referral from someone who already had hosting. It bankrupted them, despiet them being an established company.
The quality of hosting has nothing to do with it - I've just seen it happen too many times that a company promises a deal they can't deliver on, and there are large repercussions as a result.

You're missing my point. They might THINK they can provide on it, and they may fully intend to do so - but if the deal's good enough, there's the distinct possibility for it to have a bad outcome. It wouldn't be the first time.

well for the percent reward there's not a chance they can flop, as it's a percent of their profits. Percent of their additional profits since it wsa your referal.
Now for the $97+5 reward there is a chance for some backfire. What if the referer doesn't generate as much profit for the company? Well at $8/month, Dreamhost makes that much in revenue in 1 year. And since they are such an awesome host, most people stick around for longer.
Due to redicilously low costs of space and bandwidth, they do make profit. Their plans range from $8 to $99/month and I'm sure they've done some statistical analysis that shows how much profit they get from an average user.
The bottom line -- since the referal bonus goes back to the company anyways (and pays for our hosting) they are not missing out on as much as it first appears.
