file sharing

how would i enable file sharing on a network. i put the folders i want to share in the sharing folder so shouldn't i automatically see those folders on my network?

make sure the two computers are on the same work group, then go into my network places, and select set up a new net work, then reboot both comps, and it should be fine. but make sure they're on the same work group first

how do i make sure the two computers are on the same work group and if they're not how do i change it? also when u say set up a new network theres many choices there do u mean "Network setup wizard"? if i can connect to the internet on both computers doesn't that mean that they're on the same work group.

how do i check if i properly configured my network?

haha, yea that one was fast... sry for taking so long on this one.. to check for work grou, right click my computer -> properties -> computer name, and check the work group, i just keep it on MSHOME.

if both computers are using windows xp you shouldnt have a problem with filesharing. after you've made sure they're both in the same workgroup right click on the folder you want to share then go to sharing and security. then if this is the first time you've shared something you should see in blue underlined words "if you understand the security risks...." click on that then choose "just enable file sharing"..... you really dont need to worry about the wizard because all that does is sets up up your network, again, its just redundant, i've never actually used that wizard before - i think its useless. after you've done that you can share the folder and choose whether or not you wanna give write permissions.

if you go to my network places on the other computer that folder you shared should show up, if it doesnt, on the left side click on view workgroup computers, then go into the computer.

i did, i'm just giving additional advice. i share folders that are more than 100gb on my network, theres no way i'm copying all of htat into a shared documents folder

besides, if he doesnt have file sharing actually enabled, then when someone is going to try to connect to his computer through netbios a little login thing will appear and he wont be able to connect to it. the easiest way i can think of is to actually share a different folder and go through the "just enable file sharing" thing.

thanks i can now share my files. i just have 2 more questions.

1) i could only access the sharing folder if the computer i want to share the files from is on. is there any way to do it so that you can share files even though the comp isn't on?

2) can i take out the program i'm sharing onto my computer and install it and then just disable sharing on that program or that would stop the program from running denying me access?

for ur question 1:

no you cannot, since you need ur hard drive to spin inorder to access the files. at ATI they do something called remote booting, basicly, you send the computer a signal for it to turn on, then you can access it.

i read ur question 2 three times, and it still makes no sense to me.. it could be that i've worked my ass off today, and its late, but i think you should read what you wrote before posting it

lol ya question 2 is pretty bad worded i'll try it again.

2) i enabled file sharing on my basement computer and now i could use it on my laptop. now i go on my laptop and take the program out of my shared folder. now i go back to my basement computer and disable file sharing on that program. lastly i go back to my laptop and try using that program that i took out of my shared folder. will it work? or will it say access denied?

read this really carefully u might be confused again b/c i'm bad at explaining and should not be a teacher lol

if you copied it and all it'd dependecies off the shared folder then it might work... if it doesn't it won't be because of tile sharing...
