Video: A Vision of Students Today

Michael Wesch, an assistant professor of cultural anthropology at Kansas State University, has previously published his widely popular The Machine is Us/ing Us video. Since then he has made a new short video – A Vision of Students Today, which I first found through Paul Stamatiou’s blog.

It’s an absolutely fantastic video, that creates a snapshot of the student life and education.

I found most of the student made observations to be spot on, with just a minor exception:

  • Canadian education is considerably cheaper than in United States. (and we still complain!)

The highlight point was probably the fact that we, as students, do 26.5 hours of things per day. I wonder if it gets any better after the graduation? In the video, “some have suggested that technology alone can save us”. Thought the students honestly admitted that they “facebook through class”.

A student’s life could be hectic, and it seems that while at school – we do everything but study. My interesting “while at University” fact — I write more for this blog, than I do for all of the classes this term!

I do about 4 hours of school related things a day, on average.

Not wasting time going to math and CS classes is a major time saver. In most of those classes, the professor will just read the course notes to you. So, unless you can’t read, there are better things to do.

Students online in class? No! hehehe… Check my IP, I’m “studing” in class right now. CAD design in SolidWorks. I can’t even USE SolidWorks because it doesn’t run on Ubuntu…

I’m bored and off to wikipedia! Bye!

In my college all the lecturer read back what on notes. Student will get less attracted. Student need to participate to get active, plain reading is a waste of time.

Great video. I had no idea you Americans had such huge class sizes. When I was in school, my average class size was between about 8 and 18 people.

I guess that Canada, in the Computer Science Canada title, is the ambigious word. Although it’s pretty much the same here. Though then again it depends on what kind of classes you’re taking. My Computer Science classes are 150 people. My Philosophy classes are 15 people in size.

The first part of the video reminds me why I like teaching at a community college better than a 4-year university.

I know all of my student’s names, and my largest class size is 30. I know most of their majors and where they are from. I grade their work and lecture to them – there are no TAs.

Couldn’t pay me enough money to go teach at a 4-year university. Hate the fake college degree.
