What is Web 2.0? A buzzword, still not strictly defined. Michael Wesch, an Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Kansas State University has put together an interesting video – Web 2.0 … The Machine is Us/ing Us. The idea is that by separating the content from formatting restrains, we can better use, exchange, connect… just watch the video.
The conclusion is pretty moving. With the changing paradigm of the available content we’ll need to rethink a few things…
Consider this blog – it forms a part of my identity; my authorship, yet this post is inspired by someone else’s (video) copyright; my family and friends keep up with what I’m up to… Though there are concerns as well – RSS can (and has been) mined for content. Others use blogs as daily journals, raising privacy concerns. Etc.
Web 2.0 is not just pretty CSS, pastel colours, and rounded edges – it is the explosion of available data and content (oftentimes user generated). We’ll need to rethink a few things…
[Ping: Aidan] You should see this.
That video was well worth watching. It’s nice when people realize that there is more to web 2.0 than the looks. People say “Web 2.0 is just a fad” when really they mean that the design elements we see these days are a fad, and in that I agree with them. But I don’t think many people would say that the elements of web 2.0 like user generated content, usability, simplicity, etc. will go away any time soon.

Web 2.0 In …
A powerful, short video on Web 2.0……
@Paul – good point. hehe – Dont judge a website by its CSS? Many people see a new trend in style or AJAX widgets and scream Web 2.Ohh!, but it is the idea of simplicity and usability that drive those designs, and users that generate content for the widgets. The finer details are often missed.
@seanrox – glad you have enjoyed the video, and thank you for the link

Rethink…
From Armed Liberal, check out Michael Wesch’s impressive — what? Presentation? Movie? Artwork? — on Web 2.0. It happens that I’m not usually captured by the latest computer buzzwords, because my entry into the Internet was in the Spring o…
I’m confused about this web 2.0. Is there a better explanation elsewhere?

Well Web 2.0 is the new Web. It’s characterized by social media websites such as Flickr, Digg, etc. Many (wrongfully) think it has to do with new trendy layouts (large graphics, pastel colours, etc), but as the video explains, it has to do with user generated content (voting on Digg, uploading photographs to Flickr, commeting on blogs), and the versatility of the said content. Additionally things like web standards (W3C) and accessability play an important role in making Web 2.0 more user friendly and accessable.
