Static backgrounds?

Well, i have this assignment, and i need to do the following.

Create a background, using loops etc to prove i can do it to my teacher (assignment requirements) and i need to animate a character across the output window.

The problem is, even with threads, the character ereases the background when he passes over it.

What are the ways I can make it so it doesnt erease the background? i cant import static images to replace the background, so what i can do?
