I know you can call from PC to PC for free, but I don't think you can call PC-phone or vice versa for free. It usually costs a small fee to do that. Download.com has a nice section on this sort of thing here.

I've been wondering this too. I think he means, being able to use your PC's modem and your standard land-line phone service in order to make calls.

Yep there are many 'phone' programs. There are even programs that allow you to join a phone 'server' and talk with many people.

For all this, you need a computer microphone.

Well no-duh, but is there a way to replace your phone that you plug into the phone-jack with your computer and be able to take and recieve calls with it? *without* the need of the internet, in a sense?

OMG. *sigh*. You know how there's analog telephone lines, right?
Okay. Unplug your telephone, and plug in your PC to that same jack.
Now, find some software that can use that line and your modem to make calls with your speakers and mic. Not that VoIP crap. That's what I mean.

I was responding to the post before yours. I have a habit of forgetting my post, and then clicking submit much later Laughing.

About what you are asking, I don't think there is a way to do that. At least, I don't know one...

From the description this program Express Dial you can use a Fax Modem and a headset to make calls over analog phone lines. Its a free program.
I tried dialing out on it to a cell phone that had no time, and got the phones voice mail. I didnt get to try reciveing calls or making a call I could talk on, cause I got no microphone right now.

Well... exactly what is the use of a "voice" modem? I know for sure that you can use a regular analog modem to, er "accidently" call somebody's home phone instead of your ISP and hear them on your speakers wondering who the hell is calling them. But I don't know if you can talk to them just by plugging a microphone into your mic connection (like on a sound card as opposed to on the modem, if you have it).

I've heard of dial-up viruses that force your modem to make an 1800 number at like 2$ per minute. Scary huh?

Porn dialers, yeah. I joked about making one and including it in a program unexpectedly. But by that point... who had a modem still?
