PostPosted: Sat Jun 11, 2005 9:39 am   Post subject: Rogers censoring the internet?

A friend left his computer logged on at school and we decided to play a prank on him, and change his wallpaper to IE loaded on Google searching for "hentai rape". Almost all website didn't display the picture but instead shows different colours with the "alt" of the picture shown on the top-right corner.

I immidiately thought that Google must be flagging the word "rape", and I weant home, weant on msn to show some people and they saw those boxes too, but upon further inspection (mainly, clicking the pictures and seeing if they loaded straight from the page), I noticed that it really wasn't Google that was doing it, but to my surprise, it was Rogers that was doing that.

I don't care for hentai rape, or who knows what they've been censoring from me being able to see. But it's the principle of the matter. I thought only communist China censored their internet, not us.

Just a little rant. Rogers has angered me yet again. Thought I should vent.

so if you're into pr0n and you have rogers, you go to a page then little coloured boxes with descriptive titles will pop up?
wow.
the boxes are multi couloured right?
i laugh at those people who paid for a uber fast rogers connection and membership to a censored sight. Laughing

How does rogers implement the censoring? Do you have to install their software or something? They gave me a cd with rogers broswer and stuff when I signed up but I havnt touched it.

There isn't censoring on Rogers, it's some problem with the website or at your end.

It's not just a website. It's all websites. That's just one example. I've been looking around google but at the moment it just seems to be inappropriatly named images that are censored (from what I can tell, because Google gives me no search results when looking for Rogers Internet Censoring, well it does, but irrelevant). And when those actual sites are loaded, none of the content of the pages is displayed in the browser. Only a colour shade, but there is content, because when I "View Source", I can see everything that should be displaying. *sigh*, I might change ISPs, just because I don't trust Rogers anymore.

BTW, my school uses Rogers as well. So, yeah.

Yes, because you know how I just love to set my FireFox's "Auto-Change-Images-That-Have-The-Word-'Rape'-In-Them-To-A-Single-Random-Colour-Shade" option enabled. Rolling Eyes

I am certainly not a lawyer, but wouldn't it be illegal to do something like this, without a VERY clear warning in their TOS? You're not getting the service you paid for! And seeing as pr0n is one of the main things the 'net is used for, I don't think this would have gone undetected and unannounced for so long...

Are you sure your parents didn't install any of those Net-Nanny software things while you weren't looking? Wink

I seriously doubt rogers has censoring.

I use rogers and I get the nastiest porn pop-ups all the time when I get spy-ware (luckily I don't have it anymore).

If the prank was played on the school computer then there was probably a master admin and all the other sub-accounts had a form of parental control on them. I don't think schools would really let you look up porn..
As for your house... You your self might be under parental control and you might not even know it. Also, rogers, about 6 months ago released some new software which effects the way you surf the internet. I can't remember it exactly, but you should check your internet settings there.

First of all, no one in my house touches my computer without losing an arm. I even locked my box at the BIOS level, so good luck trying to brute force my SAM file. Plus, I highly doubt that any of the computer illiterate people here know how to even turn on my computer (I always turn the switch off at the back when I shut-down). I'm the only one that uses this computer anyways, everyone else has their own computer, and unless they figured out some magical way to flash the router's firmware to include image-filtering, I highly doubt that it's local.

Second, I didn't even know Rogers came with a CD that had any kind of software on it. As soon as the dude came here, I told him to run a wire to the office, give me the box, and let me set everything up. Once he left, I took the modem out of the box, tossed everything else in the basement somewhere, made my router connect to the modem using DHCP, and set up all the computers as a LAN.

Trust when I say it's not local, my sister would be the most computer *comfortable* (not literate), and I had to install Adobe Reader on her computer because she had no idea what to do.

It's not local, or everyone at my house are very cunning actors pretending to know squat.

I used rogers for most of the last 6 years; and I never had that problem. I really doubt it is a rogers thing.
