PostPosted: Thu Dec 30, 2004 9:14 am   Post subject: spyware... help!!!

*edit: arent spywares already illegal???

a pop up window came up just when i was about to click something... and you can guess the rest... anyway i now have 7 icons on my desktop that wont go away, the only action i can do to them is double click (deleting wont work, renaming wont work, like if you press "del" nothing comes up) and the weird thing is, these files wont show up if you search for them, they dont show up when you system starts. I'm guessing they are some internet link they put on your desktop, so they dont count as files (or something like that)

I've tried spybot, ad-Aware, nothing works. I remember there's a thing in windows that allow me to see what gets load up when windows starts and it also allow me to choose if i want to have them get loaded. can anyone tell me where that is? thanx alot

you'll want to press Start > Run and type "msconfig" and then click the startup tab.

those icons dont appear when you start the machine, i think something gets loaded at the startup and put those there, imean i can only see them on my desktop, but if i use "my computer" and then go up one lvl (which is my desktop in a browser) i cant see those files.

... must be new

With spyware, Spybot should be able to take care of it. Keep in mind that there is a bug, and it will say that there are 5 entires called "DSO Exploit." These will keep coming back whenever you scan, but they are not spyware. Don't worry, spybot won't be able to do anything about them (but it'll think it can).

As for viruses, I think that the best course of action would be to reformat. It's been my experience that anti-virus software doesn't do all that great of a job most of the time.

exact same problem, what I did is just go into msconfig, unselect the startup files that start this self-recovering exe. (its an exe that puts these icons there, and if u end task it, it automatically starts up another file which has a random name, and restarts this, if you try to delete them, they're already in use. In your application data folder which might be hidden for some people). Once I restart, I just go in and change the folder options to normal, and delete all the files. another way I did this before is just pop in a bootup disk and delete them from dos.
