What exactally is the use for ActionScript, I think it is used to make free standing programs (like the pick up ball one in this forum) but is that the only reason to use it... Also, is it like any other programming languages...

you can script your actions (sometimes it sounds more descriptive when you rearrange the words )

basically you can program your animations, make games, web applications, etc. I think there's some server side capabilities such as database access and what not.
