I'm a student attending a Canadian university. I'm in a bit of an unusual situation, and sincerely confused as to what to do with my life.
I started out in university majoring in Computer Science. Afterwards, I switched into Dentistry, and have spent one full year at a dental school studying to become a dentist.
However, I felt uneasy leaving behind CS as I believe it is a very interesting field with a lot of future potential in both the industry and in the academia.
I chose dentistry purely based on my aptitude for working on fine details and the job security, but it doesn't offer me that scholarly reverence and the excitement of CS.
Also, I was a pretty good student in CS in comparison to others.
Now the question is.. should I leave dentistry to pursue Computer Science? What do you guys think?
I feel like I will regret my life for missing out on the excitement and innovation.
This is an incredibly uncomfortable situation, especially since I already invested a large amount of tuition in Dentistry.
I would appreciate your honest input about the pathway to an innovative career in comp sci.
Thank you!

That's a hard decision, something that should require a lot of thought. Dentist is a very comfortable job, and something that we will always need, so it's a good decision for a career.

That being said, if computer science excites you, you should probably really consider doing it. There are many careers available that are safe and comfortable (working for the public sector for instance), and there are also fast paced, high skilled, HIGH paying jobs available. I personally plan on moving to the states for a year (maybe more if I can convince my girlfriend) to get a high paying job that requires a lot of effort, then moving back to Canada to settle down with a comfortable job with good benefits and a decent salary.

If you do want to pursue dentistry still, I'd suggest learning computer science on the side, because to be honest you can probably learn more on your own then going to school anyways. Computer science is also notoriously awesome for being a mixed field, where a degree in dentistry and computer science can actually go together. You could work on dental x-ray imagery for instance, or on software for dentists office or anything really. Computer science isn't a narrow field like other fields, it encompasses nearly everything, with computer science jobs in nearly every field.
