Hi guys.
I just applied application to the following below.
- Computer Science CO-OP at UTSC
- Computer Science at UofT Set.George
Assuming that I get accepted from them all, which one should I choose to go??
Which one has a better lecture quality, job opportunities and financial success in future??
Is the CO-OP program at UTSC as good as UWaterloo? I am worried if I will have to just play around doing nothing during the CO-OP seasons because of the lack of job opportunities..
After graduating U of T one day, where can you possibly get a job from? How is the employments rate comparing to UWaterloo??
These are the data from 2010.
-----------------------------------------------------
Total enrollment for Computer Science is 495 at St.George and 104 at UTSC while it is 1,625 at UWaterloo.
Total Bachelor's and 1st Professional Degree Conferred by program is 148 at St.George and 34 at UTSC while it is 215 at UWaterloo.
-----------------------------------------------------
Can anybody explain why are they significantly different? Why there were only 100 people applied to UTSC?? is UTSC bad that much?
And why it is only 30% of people graduated from U of T? Is it that difficult to graduate?
I know that all these questions are depending on people's thought, but still, I would love to see your opinions. |

The St. George campus is just nicer
When considering, you should keep in mind that PEY (internship) is an option for the non–co-op program. |

Low percentage of graduation means that the program is more difficult than people may have at first though and they are dropping out. As St.George is the main campus, it has the largest program, nothing more to it than that really. I am guessing the UofT figures are by year and Waterloo for overall which would put them around the same size.
UTSC has 3 co-op terms instead of Waterloo's 6 bcaause it keeps the traditional style for your class time and so summers just become co-op while at Waterloo the program is designed around the co-op. UTSG has their PEY which is available (note no co-op at this campus)
Generally they are both very reputable programs and once you graduate you should have a job regardless of which one you go to and it should be at a similar level. |

Enrollment doesn't mean how many people applied, it means how many people were accepted into the program.
Low graduation rate can mean people in that program drop out of university or they switch out to different programs. Those who "fail out" are a small portion. If you're actually dedicated to doing well in university, this shouldn't be a problem. |

I kind of *want* to go to UTSC. Not because UTSG doesn't have co-op (I am aware of PEY) but I am already behind a year.
Being able to take Co-op at UTSC will allow me to complete the program in 4 years rather than 5 years at UTSG (with PEY). |

That sounds reasonable. Just two comments... You might not want to rush through university. Sure, you're one year behind, but you only do this once and you have a lot of years ahead of you. Also, you could always just go to StG and not do PEY, but work during the summers. |

Good luck with your application.
I had to make a decision between 2 unis and it was a tough call. I think the most important things to consider are: the quality of the computing department, travel time, and international reputation of the university.
Unis that rank within top 300 in the world are all very good universities. UT is within top 30 in the world, the ranking cannot get much better than that! |

5 years? Assuming you are a guy, that's almost 7% of your life! Just for university! |

Whilst that's true, I think if I were to go to UTSG and not do PEY, then I will not have the same job opportunities as UTSC co-op. I'd probably end up working at metro or something for the summer, lol, and I don't want that.
UTSC would be the best for me since it is for years, but UTSG also has game design courses... (Yes I want to do games development later on). I was thinking of going to UTSC and taking the game design courses at the downtown campus. I believe you are able to do that if it fits into your time table.
Tough choice x.x |

I was referring to working as a developer, or something else related to your program. After first year, it's possible but might be difficult, however 2nd year and up it's very doable - as long as you're a fairly good student and can demonstrate that you have (or can learn) the skills required.

you could also do both PEY and work through summers. Considering the way the program works you have summers off regardless other than the 1 (or 2 if you do 16 months) that is spent during your PEY |
